Cup Legends To Be Honoured In Queensland

Friday, 3 December 2004: Three Melbourne Cup legends will be honoured in special ceremonies to be held in Queensland next weekend.


Retired jockeys Jack Purtell, W.A (Billy) Smith and George Podmore will all receive specially made trophies to commemorate their victories in Australia’s most famous race.

Purtell now 83, will receive three miniature Melbourne Cups in honour of his victories on Hiraji (1947) Wodalla (1953) and Rising Fast (1954).

Purtell will receive his trophies in a special ceremony to be held during the Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s race meeting on Sunday December 12.

Billy Smith who won the centenary Melbourne Cup in 1960 will be honoured at a similar ceremony at the Gold Coast Turf Club’s race meeting on Saturday, December 11.

That same day, 78-year-old George Podmore will receive his Melbourne Cup trophy at his Gold Coast home.

Saturday, 11th December - Presentation of Melbourne Cup Trophy to:

Billy Smith (1960 Melbourne Cup – Hi Jinx) at the Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting
George Podmore (1956 Melbourne Cup – Evening Peal) at the home of George Podmore

Sunday, 12th December - Presentation of Melbourne Cup Trophy to:

Jack Purtell (1947, 1953 & 1954 Melbourne Cups – Hiraji, Wodalla and Rising Fast) at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club meeting at Caloundra

I am researching my family history but cant find anything on jack purtells parents. I know his mother was lillian louia agnes stevens bn 1882 launceston tasmania. Do you know who his father was? ”

At the age of 13 I desperately wanted to be a jockey, but in those days female jockeys were not accepted. But my favourite jockey was Jack Purtell and he was my first teenage crush. I am now 73 and wonder whether or not he is still alive and how he is right now. ”
