Channel Seven Become Sole Free-To-Air Racing Provider

Bookmark and Share

Monday, 14 January 2013: Channel Seven will remain the free-to-air broadcasters of the Melbourne Cup Carnival for the next five years whilst also picking up the coverage of key Sydney feature race meetings.

Channel Seven will become the sole free-to-air provider of Australian feature race meetings commencing with the upcoming Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals.

With Australian feature racing previously shared by Channel Seven and Channel Nine, the new agreement will see the former cover 27 days of racing throughout the calendar.

“This is a great day for Australian racing and a great day for Seven – all the big events live and available to all Australians,” Seven chief executive Tim Worner said in a press release.

“The Golden Slipper, The AJC Derby, The Caulfield Cup, The Cox Plate and so many more Group One events will be brought to life in the one dedicated destination.

“Live sport is a key part of Seven’s strategy and we look forward with great excitement to 2013 when at times there will be live sport on all three of our channels simultaneously. It is a great business outcome for Seven and a great breakthrough for viewers.”

Racing Victoria today confirmed the announcement they will extend their association with Channel Seven until 2019.

The broadcaster at this stage is expected to split their coverage of the proposed 27 meetings between their premier free-to-air station, Seven, and 7Two.

That is fabulous news Racing Gal!! Thanks for the info :) Switching over from 522 for only 4 races a year ---Yep, I can handle that:) ”

guess that means more races where we get TV shots of horses hooves on the turn for home? ”

I read on another site that the only races with a delay will be Derby, Cup, Oaks and Emirates States. All other races will be live on TVN including mounting yard coverage (apparently 7 will be taking pictures from TVN). ”

Forget the flowery speeches, who amongst you will stand up and spell out exactly what this decision means for us saps who pay through the nose for Foxtel ? The silence is deafening ! ”

Totally agree Tony & Maccamax

When watching the races from home, the coverage of ''The Day-Spa Show'' peppered with the odd thoroughbred --is,for this genuine racing fan, both detracting & irritating.

Sure,I''ll don a pretty dress too for a day at the track--but thats NOT my reason for being there.

Racing IS and should be:
ALL about the HORSES :))

Jumping all around the globle looking for coverage . . A messy day and detracts from the interest for serious punters. If they want pretty hats and shorty skirts , go to a fashion show . Two lots of horses don''t mix. ”

maybe with 7 having the two channels they could have one solely on the racing side and the other with the fashions celebs and so called tipsters ”

A few years back, free-to-air covered the Sandown Classic meeting the week following the end of the Flemington carnival. In more recent years, despite some high quality horseflesh at the Sandown Carnival, free-to-air hasn''t given it coverage. I do hope that this new arrangement will include the return of free-to-air coverage of the Sandown (now Zipping) Classic meeting. ”

Where''s the racing editor when you need him? There''s a great opportunity to write a hard hitting article about how the VRC has once again shafted punters with this agreement Chris. Are you up for it? ”
