I remember backing a Hayes import, first up at 8/1 one day at Cheltenham over 1250m. As his price crashed I became even more optimistic about its chances.
I could not believe my eyes as the race unfolded. At the 600m, my horse, a stayer, had come around the field to sit outside the leader, Bar Flyer. Both jockeys sat quietly on their mounts. As they rounded the turn, I was thinking to myself ?come on, what are you waiting for - put the pressure on? but nothing happened. Both jocks were content to just sit quietly right up until the 200m mark. At the 200m, both jockeys pulled the whips out and Bar Flyer was able to outsprint the stayer by almost a length. Bar Flyer was just an average sprinter by Adelaide standards.
At the end of the day I sat around the table having drinks with my mates and watched the replays. I told them, to look closely at my horse and tell me whether it was given every chance. When the race finished, they all looked at me, puzzled and said ?so what??
I explained to them ?had the jock on my horse put pressure on Bar Flyer from the 600m, he would have won by 6 lengths? I rarely make such extravagant statements, but that?s how impressed I was by the beaten stayer that day. Their response ?Ahh, you?re talking out of your pocket?
I then made this following statement and the only reason I remember it is because when you make a prediction, you should be able to trace what happens. What I said was ?In months to come, you will wonder how this horse ever got beaten by Bar Flyer?.

The name of the horse was ?Jeune?.

I don?t like seeing stayers flattened first up, and in hindsight, it was well ridden (with the future in mind) even if it did put a gaping hole in my pocket. I am recounting this story, because Tontonan has started a thread about the Melbourne Cup. I loved this horse and followed his career throughout, even though I never had the pleasure of backing it again (I only bet Adelaide races).

I am happy to inform you both that you are both right. Jeune's first run in Australia was in the Goodwood Handicap of 14 May 1994 when he was ridden by AG Clarke. He finished 16th about 6 lengths from the winner.
But the race Gary refers to was his second run in Australia when he was first up at Cheltenham with A Smith in the saddle when he was 2nd beaten 3/4 Lens by Bar something on the 20th August 1994.

Patsy, thanks for your response. Neither of us is going loopy, I hope.
Hayes ran him in the Adelaide Cup carnival in May 1994 and he did as you described. He was turned out and RESUMED in August 1994 at Cheltenham and it is this race in August that I refer to.
His next run was in Melbourne when he rattled home for 3rd. He made the hair stand on the back of my neck as he vindicated my faith in him.
Many threads dispute who the real champs are, but our perceptions are often coloured when we become emotionally touched by a special horse.

Hi Garry I remember Jeunes first ever race, the one in Adelaide clearly as it was one of my first bets in Australia...Jeune came out of the stalls 2 lengths last missing the start completely and ran on to finish an encouraging 6th beaten around 3 lengths,im not sure what race you were watching as he never disputed the lead and was never going to win?I backed him at around 33to1 but cant recall a plunge on him,its a long time ago are you sure youve got the facts right??Im pretty certain mine are correct, one of us is going loopy thats for sure!Maybe other readers remember this race also..I remember it because it was a high profile imports first race and you all know how keen on them I am,take care.

Patsy.

Pantsman,
I'm quite happy with them. Remember, they're racing against each other, not Vic jocks. The jock who rode Jeune was an apprentice called A G Smith. I'm not sure what's happened to him now.
Also the horse that beat Jeune wasn't Bar Flyer - it was Barway.
During the Adelaide Cup carnival in May the Vic jocks absolutely cleaned up, so they certainly are a cut above.

Has anybody ever actually taught the adelaide jocks to ride, or do they just throw them on a horse over there?
