It is a sad day for racing. The Dash has retired. While he did not win many The Dash very rarely ran a bad race. Unfortunately he did not go out the winner he deserved but he did run a typically brave race-the sad thing is he was still probably a run short-Nikolic was very keen to tackle the QE.

Although he won 2 Group 1s, I think the Dash's career best performance came when he ran Northerly to a neck in the Turnbull. Northerly's next 2 runs were magnificent wins in the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
His second to Yell (had he run straight he would have won) in the Australia Stks was also a highlight, beating home the country's best sprinters in Spinning Hill, Falvelon, Bel Esprit etc.

The Dash was only a neck or so off the best around and will be missed by this racing pundit.

Thanks Dash!!!!!!!

cheers
Spartacus

hmmmmmmmm,

I once made the comment that DFC was the worst horse in Australia, and I dont think I was far off.

Or maybe I had it wrong, he was under the guidance of one of the worst trainers in Australia, or maybe I had it wrong again, maybe his owners were completely dillusional!

What on earth were they thinking running him in the a) Caulfield Cup and b) Sandown Classic???

That prep should of just about killed the horse until they figured it out, 1600m-2000m was his best, no further, but unfortunaltey for the racing public only gave him 1 prep at his optimum distances as an older horse to watch him shine.

2nds to Yell, Lohnro, Grand Armee and Arlington Road aren't to be ashamed of, but the last in the CC and the 2nd last in the SC are terrible.

But take stock breeders Rick Hore-Lacy has a knack of turning out stallions from the stable, if he is well enough supported at stud, he could turn out to be a great source of outcrossing.

Unfotunatley the Dasher didnt have much racing left in him as a leg injury from last year was starting to play up again. The Dash had some bone chips removed late last year and over the last few weeks there had been swelling in the joint on the leg that was operated on and you would of probably got another race or 2 out of him.

I think the owners decided it was best to send him to stud sooner than later while he was still producing fairly good results.

"I pegged him as a nonwinner very early on"

what after 2 starts? stop kidding yourself.

hore-lacy still has Dantana, he's not a bad horse.

DFC in the hands of another trainer would have been very good.

I would have thought that he'd earn more from another season of racing than one in the breeding barn.

Being a Secret Savings horse, he will have some interesting bloodlines for a lot of breeders I'm sure.

Wasn't an absolute favourite of mine either but any horse who is competitive in top WFA races from 1200 to 2000 is going to be sorely missed.

It's a shame that the owners didn't keep him going for another month. He would've been a chance in the QE and a bigger chance in the Doomben Cup. A 3rd G1 would've looked pretty good on his record - he probably deserved it too, with 4 or 5 G1 seconds. I think he also finished desperately close to the $2mill mark.

DFC was not my favourite race horse, but you have to admire his grit. It will be interesting to see how he goes as a stallion and what support he gets. He's not got the Northern Dancer line aand is out of a Rubiton mare, so hopefully he'll get the support of local breeders.

Cheers
LD

It is a sad day not only for DFC admirers, but also for Rick Hore-Lacy as he no longer has any decent horses in his stable. I too remember the futurity, but unfortunately for other reasons as i was on the 2nd horse! Jokes aside, DFC was a very consistent galloper and acquitted himself admirably against the best horses we have to offer. As has been stated, he rarely ran a bad race and unfortunately in his latter races, tended to be a bit too close to the leaders which i believe did not suit his normal racing pattern.

I'm a punter who backs winners, Muirfield. You obviously are not.

I've got nothing against DFC. I love his type. I pegged him as a nonwinner very early on, and the only thing that confused me was that short winning burst in Melbourne after the MM.

Apart from that, he was a lovely reliable value maker for me. Let a hundred more DFCs bloom.

infidel,

I didn't notice Spartacus say anything about "punting success" or otherwise. I think his sentiment was that Dash For Cash was a good honest horse, who gave his all pretty successfully at the top level for a couple of years and will be missed. How can anyone argue with that? I wish more horses ran as consistently as he did.

It will be a sad day for racing as a sport if the only critieria for judging a good horse if whether or not someone has won money on them.

Disappointing, thought he had the potential to be the new Shogun Lodge, but to no avail. Oh well, Dash, thanks for the memories, ill never forget the futurity, you funded a great night.

Thanks Spartacus.

Infidel must have been that fool who said Dash for Cash was basically a hack (before coming out and running 4 group 1 seconds in a row).

The magnitude of his stupid comments would fill a book.

Muiry,
the Dash would have been a big chance in the Slipper. Unfortunately he hadnt qualified, he needed to win that Pago Pago as his only run previously was a win in a Sandown midweeker,

Infidel, The Dash had shown again and again that he improved with racing in a preparation. In fact, his 2 Group 1 wins were at the 6th and 7th runs in his preparation. And his best runs last spring (in the Turnbull and Mackinnon) were at his 7th and 9th runs in respectively.
Of Arlington Road's 5 wins, on the other hand, 1 was first-up, 3 have been second-up, and the other was at his fourth run from a spell. He had also won two barrier trials.

Just the facts, Infidel. Danny Nikolic, who just happens to have ridden the Dash yesterday, said that there was improvement left in him and was disappointed that the QE was not on the agenda.

cheers

Arlington Rd had one 1200m run under his belt.

Sad day indeed (although I think I only successfully backed him in the Futurity).

Very under-rated horse. Should just about have beaten Lonhro in the Mackinnon.

At his best he wasn't far behind the 2 best horses in the country.

Wonder why he didn't run in the slipper after flying home in one of the lead ups? Probably a good thing.
