Should umpires OVER-RULING linesmen (who are then found to be correct by Hawkeye) also have a limit of 2 wrong over-rules? :-)

Because if we didn't have Hawkeye operating at the Melbourne Cup then it would have been clear that Pop Rock had got up and I would have been able to buy some new Sunline socks. In any case a very different situation Gazza as the finish line is everything in racing. In tennis one linesmen's decision in a tennis player's favour doesn't determine the outcome of the event.

And I have never ever heard that great player complain about having lost matches due to bad line calls. I never heard Bjorn Borg compain either or Chris Evert....etc etc. The modern players have been pampered so much and allowed to get the world to stop for them and abuse umpires whenever they so desire....a good player doesn't need Hawkeye. The great Federer reckons it's ridiculous as well. However, it seems that it's here to stay.

If the technology is there, why use it in a limited way, use it for all calls, and end the contentious part of the game. With these new strings and frames, players are hitting the ball much harder and more topspin can be imparted on the ball than ever before. Line calling is becoming much more difficult to call with the naked eye. Lets get it right please. | | Post a reply to this message. |

However, more importantly I think tennis is getting to a ridiculous state when the linesmen and central umpire are not considered sufficient means of officiating a match. Let the game flow and make these elite and well-paid athletes get used to the fact that an umpire is there to call the shots, not a machine. So what they get an occasional bad call. Oh diddums.

Like most technology introduced to sport it only alleviates one part of the problem. What if a player feels that, during a rally, one of his/hers opponent's shots goes long/wide but is not called? This cuurently cannot be challenged I believe. | | Post a reply to this message. |
