Reckon they shoulda kept this and got rid of Vic park which has to be one of the worst going round. | | Post a reply to this message. |

Upgrade of Vic Park shouldn't have been lumped in with permanent V8 racing facilities.
VPark great location for horse racing, only other straight 1000m track in Oz (don't like straight racing though)and 99 yr lease preferable to having capital tied up in land at Cheltenham.

I wonder if they would have planned this knowing what the basket-case Adeliade City Council threw at them with Vic park. | | Post a reply to this message. |

They raced there on the day that Redoute's Choice beat Testa Rossa in the Guineas, and I have fond memories of the race. They were serving beer after the race, so from my point of view there was no problem with the catering!
As for being hard to get there, well, that surely has to be a joke. You are literally 15 minutes from everywhere in Adelaide. Pop over here and take a trip to Sandown if you want to experience travelling to a race meeting.
Sad to see it go, as I think they need 2 tracks in order to make racing successful. For some reason the whole industry over there seems to struggle, but I wish it well for the future.

Get two meetings in the space of a few days @ Morphetville and a drop of rain and it's stay well away from the rails and a nightmare to punt on. Who's going to go to Murray Bridge if Cheltenham was hard to get too! Cheltenham's only 15 minutes from town! Catering is woeful @ nearly all sporting events, not just Cheltenham. Port Adelaide Cup winner Foolish Lad being the last run @ Cheltenham is apt as it will turn into a foolish decision to sell. | | Post a reply to this message. |
Author: theprincess Timestamp:- 18/2/2009 9:43:25 PM Subject: Re: so long Chelteneham Message: Not me, I'm glad its going, should have been done years ago but the "residents" kicked up a fuss. It is THE worst track to get too and cater for the paying public. Its not going to be saved this time and the State Govt. is finally taking some control over the industry (very, very slowly). Hopefully its not too late but some decisions are fianlly being made.
On a positive the Murray Bridge idea is something that could turn everything around for racing in this state and even Australia??? Not many go to races these days so imagine having a blank canvass to design and build something for "Future Racing" that takes the punter literally into the race with all the interactive media available these days.

Author: sobig Timestamp:- 18/2/2009 9:27:53 PM Subject: Re: so long Chelteneham Message: Today was the last at the present Gawler track, the new one apparently will take about 12 months and is likely to be pro-ride.
The inner Morphetville track is supposed to ready to race on, I think, in April or May | | Post a reply to this message. |
Author: Balciano Timestamp:- 18/2/2009 7:30:47 PM Subject: Re: so long Chelteneham Message: Was today the last meeting at Gawler before the upgrade commences?
Not the ideal time to lose another track for months on end but the upgrade is much needed, that home straight is a nightmare.
Here's hoping no misfortune befalls Morphetville in the foreseeable future..it's all we've got! | | Post a reply to this message. |
Author: Poindexter Timestamp:- 18/2/2009 5:08:26 PM Subject: Re: so long Chelteneham Message: Pity that Ewe seem to be unable to get the spelling of the track correct
Then again.. Ewe didn't even know that Vic Park has been closed to racing for over a year
Dat is why some Metro meetings were held at both Gawler and Murray Bridge within the last 12 months, that were programmed for Vikky Park

Victoria Park was a sad case, walking through there and seeing the empty betting rings which would have been packed to the rafters 50 years ago is a pretty depressing sight. The only time they ever got a crowd in recent years was for the Twilight Christmas meeting.
From 3 metropolitan tracks to 1 in the space of 18 months..doesn't bode well for Adelaide racing. At this rate in 12 months time my local track will be Moone Valley. A mere 700 kms east. | | Post a reply to this message. |

I remember being ultra confident Not Related would win the Xmas Handicap when she had a big impost only to learn the hard way weight will stop you . . .
And the Dermody in recent years has been a great advertisement for the 'Discreet' family in Adelaide, whether it be She's OR Be . . .
So long. | | Post a reply to this message. |
