Author: Khaptingly Timestamp:- 14/6/2010 10:02:44 AM Subject: Shut the gates Message: For some years I have never understood why anyone would attend a city race meeting.
Unless maybe you get free entry and drink/food as cheap as at home or at least at the pub/club.
Country meetings are sometimes a good day out, particularly if the crowd is just a reasonable number.
Imagine going to this years Melbourne Spring carnival competing for service with 1000's of young loud mouth, "look at me" and "look who I am with" drunks. No way.
And anyone in any doubt about whether to ever to attend a city meeting ever again, may just want to ask most of those that attended Eagle Farm on 12 June 2010.
If you love racing and punting, but do not have to work there on the day, do yourself a favour.

Nigel, agree to an extent. I do think however, if you congregate in the right areas at the Melbourne Spring Carnival you can avoid the 18-30 party crowd. I used to revel in that but am well past it. The full members only areas at Flemington such as the long bar or the island bar or the members dining room are completely detached from the created atmosphere you talk of as no guests whatsoever are allowed in. Of course you need to be a full member to gain access though. If I was not a member I would not attend the spring carnival. Can't understand how those out in the public areas can enjoy themselves on Derby Day and Cup Day. I've been to Stradbroke/Derby Day once. The day Show A Heart got up. The atmosphere was great, the racing was great, but the Eagle Farm facilities were dilapidated to say the least. And I was in the members. The thing that irks me the most each year are the celebrities and wanna bes that gain access to the members during the carnival. Did give me a laugh one year though. Just after Makybe had won her second Cup and the storm had swept through I was going down to the ring to collect and saw Brooke Hanson making her way up the escalator absolutely drenched. She's been a serial pest at the best of times so I had a little chuckle as we passed each other. | | Post a reply to this message. |

If they had a decent rock/blues band on after the races i wold go but otherwise rather go fishing or do something else and collect my winnings at the end of the day.

Country Cups aren't a lot of fun either; the brawl at a Geelong Cup meeting a few years back had to be seen to be believed.
That's what happens when race clubs and promoters turn race meetings into parties. A sign of the times.

Hick finds a day at the races is much more fun if you stumble in wreaking of rotting garbage after sleeping rough the previous night, proceed to blow the $5 you found in the gutter on the way to the track on horses like Viewed in the Orr Stakes and then bum a ride to the Salvation Army soup kitchen for your one cardboard tasting square meal of the day. First you say you were smart by placing your bets on the tab before you went. How is betting with the tab smart?
Then here and another post you get the horses name you say you backed wrong, its First Command, not Final. And you say on your $500 plan that you were backing "Final" Command for the win and never mention anything about backing Crossthestart.
Your ubeaut $500 plan has been nothing more than a look at me load of garbage, made even more so by you admitting here you bet with the tab. Yet you mouth off about laying horses.
At least people like you are good for a laugh talking up how good you think you are, only to see you drop yourself in it. | | Post a reply to this message. |

LOL @ Lister, he spends all day at Flemington sitting at a table in the Members Stand, betting and checking scores on his iphone while watching a big screen then tells us how much fun a day at the races can be. Priceless!

Author: bkmac Timestamp:- 14/6/2010 6:02:45 PM Subject: Re: Shut the gates Message: Most of the time its no worries Ive only been to 4 which were no good epsom day at randwick last year it was cold windy and very wet, everyone was inside. Ended up going to the Casino half way through. eclipse stakes at sandown for the same reasons And a 10,000 day and a stradbroke day becuase too many people and not enough area or staff.
However on saturday at eagle farm i was smart and put all my bets on in the morning with the tote. After nice collects on crossthestart, dariana and reasonable money back on final command and ringa ringa for the place i went and unloaaded on rothesay. So I didnt have to que up for the tote all day. i bought myself bottles of champagne instead of beers and that cut my queing time for drinks. Having said that, I wont be back for a winter carnival meeting for some time. | | Post a reply to this message. |

Eg as one of many examples, it was an absolute joy and privilege to be trackside at Ascot in Perth not so long ago to watch Takeover Target and Apache Cat go head to head.
Was it packed, yes. Did it cost us in petrol (long drive), entry etc, yes. Did we have to queue for food and drinks, yes. Were there annoying drunks around, yes. But so flipping what?
The buzzing atmosphere pre-race and the roar of the crowd lifting the roof off the grandstand as those two turf warriors rocketed to the post is something I'll always remember.
I backed Apache Cat so lost my money but couldn't have cared less.... after the race I couldn't get the beaming smile off my face. Neither could anyone else. The whole place was just alive with the feeling of having been lucky to witness a very special sporting moment. And of SHARING the moment with everyone there.
THAT is what racing is all about.
Not sitting in isolation your living room playing some soulless numbers game.....

Author: ragamuffin gunner Timestamp:- 14/6/2010 2:46:31 PM Subject: Re: Shut the gates Message: Of course I meant Saturday and not yesterday. Yesterday I sat on my arse in my slippers with the heater on eating twisties drinking tap water watching the tv. | | Post a reply to this message. |
Author: ragamuffin gunner Timestamp:- 14/6/2010 2:34:57 PM Subject: Re: Shut the gates Message: I attended Flemington yesterday with my wife a friend and his wife. We all live walking distance to the nearest train station so it was a trip into the city and then another short one out to Flemington. Off the train, straight into the magnificent structure that is the members stand. I would much rather spend a day at the races in the members at Flemington than any and I mean any pub or club. We had a table booked in the Atrium over looking the track and the winning post. A finer spot you could not get. A small but well groomed well behaved crowd enjoyed a great day in fabulous surroundings. Good bar service, excellent and accessible toilet facilities, brilliant view over the track and a huge screen nearby to watch the interstate races from. With our iPhones at the ready to place bets on our Internet accounts and check the footy scores we were comfortable and enjoyed a very very good social afternoon. The company was good, the environment we were in was first class and we all had a reasonable day on the punt. If you want to sit on your arse at home in front of your tv then by all means go for it. If you want to go down the local pub or club then go for it. If you are worried about the cost of food and drink then open a packet of twisties from your pantry and drink tap water. If you enjoy staying in on a cold winters day with the heater on and your slippers nearby then go for it. Conversely, if you like to have a little fun in your life and don't mind paying for the privilege, dressing up in your good suit and tie and enjoying some very fine company watching something you really enjoy, then do what we did yesterday followed by a great dinner at one of your favourite restaurants on the way home.
My wife and I aren't what you would call well off but we are both career professionals and we live a comfortable existence with a few extravagances and holidays thrown in. Lifes a lot of fun and most of our fun is had with our two year old son. Yesterday was an opportunity to get out and have some fun of a different kind and it was worth every minute.
If you are a complete stiff who spends his time on an internet forum bragging about being a champion punter. If you are a complete stiff who thinks the day we had at the races yesterday was a waste of time. If you are a complete stiff who doesn't like to pay for a good time. If you are a complete stiff who has no life. If you are a complete stiff who can't get his head out of his own arse. Call yourself Khaptingly.
I'm sure nobody would wish that on themselves.

I thought the bars (in the Member's area) were pretty good and the atmosphere was fantastic.
It was the best Brisbane meeting I've been to in more than a decade and reminded me of some of the classic carnival days back in the mid-90s (although the quality of the entire card was much better).
But then I am not a know-it-all n0b so your experience may have been different. | | Post a reply to this message. |
