I'm fortunate enough to be in Paris on the weekend of the Arc and as such am heading out with a couple of mates.
Never having been to the races in Paris, any tips about longchamp? How does it compare to the spring carnival?
And hopefully So You Think runs!

The meeting itself is brilliant. The 2nd days racing is full of quality and ofcourse includes the Arc which despite a few casualties still looks liken being one of the stongest renewals we have seen in some time.

For one of the worlds great meetings the crowd is never to big, if it wasnt for the English/Irish and press you wouldnt know it was one of the worlds great meets. The updside is you can move around in comfort compared to a MC, Cheltenham etc.

Depending on where you are staying it can be annoying getting to Longchamp. Go early and get in before the traffic gets to bad and if you dont need to stay for the last get out before the last and you shouldn't have to wait to long for a taxi, however the traffic is likely to be bad and it may take a while to get back to central Paris if that is where you are staying.

The old grandstand is going to be torn down in the near future but still provides the best viewing area for all racing. However you will need to get up reasonable high and without the right ticket that wont be possible.

Sydeston (?) is correct in that the action down the back is a long way from were you will be, binoculars and/or stay close to a TV monitor advised. The G1 Abbaye sprint is run on a staright course that is on the far side and you will def need binoculars or the TV screen

Longchamp is a big beautiful course and like most France courses is far flatter than those in England/Ireland. The setting is spectacular with the Eiffel tower in the distant background (12 o'clock from the Grandstand), close to the river with Roland Garros and surrounding parkland nearby.

No bookmakes as France is tote driven, thus put you bets on online or you will have to take tote prices, which depending on your choice can work for or against you.

Ill be there again this year and can assure you it is a meeting well worth attending. Have fun.

I was there in September 1996 and saw a group one mile race, won by Ashkalani who was ridden by Gerald Mossé and trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, the Americain connection.
My recollections which may be useful; assuming nothing has changed:

• A huuuuge course, about 2800 metres round, with a very long, roomy straight. The furthest extremity, at about the 1200 metres, looks about a mile away.

• You will need binoculars, so buy, hire or borrow them. (See first point)

• Some very good jockeys and some shockers. Stick to the household names.

• The mounting yard is out the back, behind the grandstand, so you have to walk about 200 metres if you want to run your eye over the horses.

• They have two racecallers – that is, one calls the field once, then the other takes over, then back to the first. It is bizarre.

• There will be no other races beamed in via Sky Channel or equivalent, just the one meeting, so plenty of time to study the form.

• No bookies, only tote.

• Excellent grandstand, the higher up you can get the better.

• You can get there on public transport but the earlier the better – you will be like sardines if you get the bus. Maybe take a cab.
Good luck.

Top day out and you get in for little more than a few euros. Buy a ticket at the door with no fuss at all and have easy access to everything you will need.
