Australia's Marcos Ambrose has claimed his maiden pole position in Nascar's premier division, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, in setting a new track record at Michigan International Speedway.
Ambrose's average lap speed of his Stanley Ford of the two mile (3.22km) long superspeedway was 203.241m/h (327km/h), which puts him in the elite company of luminaries such as Benny Parsons, Cale Yarborough and Bill Elliot, who have scored pole positions above the magical 200m/h mark.
Ambrose was able to take full advantage of the newly repaved track which has produced incredible speeds all weekend long.
"We are the fastest team in NASCAR and we are proud of it," Ambrose said on Sunday.
"It is a lot of hard work really. I am just a piece of it. I am the guy lucky enough to strap in the race car and drive it around the race track."
The Quicken Loans 400 takes place at the Michigan International Speedway on Monday from 2am (AEST).
