Leishman's win inspires Aussie golfers

Wednesday, 4 July 2012:

Marc Leishman's recent drought-breaking win at the Travellers Championship has lifted other Australians on the US PGA tour.

Rod Pampling believes the Victorian's win, the first of the season for Australia after the slowest start to a year since 2002, has the potential to open the floodgates.

Four Australians finished in the top 22 at last week's AT&T National won by Tiger Woods, with Adam Scott (3rd), Jason Day (T8), and Pampling (T22) all challenging towards the lead at some point.

Greg Chalmers (T17) and Leishman (T32) also had moments of brilliance before falling back.

Pampling says it's no coincidence it comes the week after Australia's first win.

"It certainly does inspire you. It was great to see Marc get our first win - I wanted to be No.1 this year but I'd be happy to be No.2. I'd be happy to be any number," Pampling said.

"You can't help but get a lift from it and as you saw Scotty, Jason and myself had a chance last week right after he won, we just couldn't quite get it done.

"I think you'll see Aussie flags up high on the leaderboards often now. I expect more Australian wins really soon, we won't be waiting long."

Pampling is placed 114th on the money list this season, knowing he needs a few big results to cement his place in the top 125 who get tour cards.

"We are in a reasonable spot but it would be nice to have a good result in the next few weeks to guarantee a spot in the first few playoffs events. From there anything can happen," he said.

"I'm just trying to ensure I stay relaxed and keep in my rounds mentally. I have lacked a little bit of momentum at times by putting bogeys on the card after birdies but I feel good in my game."

Leishman, Nathan Green, Mat Goggin, Chalmers, Nick O'Hern, Stuart Appleby, Gavin Coles and Matt Jones join Pampling in this week's Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia, which is headlined for the first time by Woods.

Woods decided to look into adding the event to his schedule two years ago after watching Appleby storm home on the final day with an amazing 59 to win the tournament.

The former world No.1 was injured last season but fronts up this year along with Phil Mickelson and recent US Open winner Webb Simpson just two weeks out from the British Open.

Elsewhere Karrie Webb and Katherine Hull are the only Australians teeing it up in this weeks women's US Open at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin.

Webb, the 2000 and 2001 champion, still remains the youngest woman to have won the career grand slam of majors having completed the slam in 2001 at 26.

But world No.1 Yani Tseng, at just 23, can take it from her with victory.
