Wednesday, 1 August 2012:

Tim Cahill's debut for the New York Red Bulls has ended in a 2-1 loss to English Premier League club Tottenham.

The Socceroo and former Everton midfielder played the opening 45 minutes of the friendly match at New Jersey's Red Bull Arena on Tuesday - just a day after being officially unveiled by the Major League Soccer franchise.

His presence up front proved crucial in the eighth minute, when he was gifted a penalty for being fouled by Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen in the box.

Cahill handed the spot kick to striker Kenny Cooper, who gave the Red Bulls an early 1-0 lead.

But the Spurs bounced back in the second half, with Gareth Bale scoring an equaliser in the 60th minute.

Gylfi Sigurdsson found the back of the net four minutes later to break the deadlock and secure a victory.

It's the Spurs only win of their pre-season tour of the US, after drawing 1-1 with LA Galaxy and 0-0 with English rivals Liverpool.

The Red Bulls' high-profile stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez were rested for the match.
