  Story By Alex Steedman

Monday, 21 May 2012: Anthony Freedman and connections appear to have another live chance in the Cups later this spring after Mawingo claimed his first Group 1 success in last Saturday's Doomben Cup.

Mawingo was sound the run prior when placed in the Group 2 Hollindale Cup (1800m) on the Gold Coast a fortnight earlier however met the two runners [Shez Sensational (1st), Lights Of Heaven (2nd)] who beat him on that occasion once again in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2400m).

The Anthony Freedman-trained entire arguably had more in his favour third run back from a spell, rising in distance and obtaining the services of leading jockey Nash Rawiller.

Midfield in the run, Mawingo and Rawiller stayed close to the fence turning for home and got the required split between runners around the 250m.

Mawingo went stride for stride with talented mare Lights Of Heaven until gaining the upper hand at the 50m on his way to a Short Neck victory.

After an unsuccessful protest third vs first, Peter Moody runners filled the minor placings in the form of Lights Of Heaven  and Manighar .

The performance yielded Mawingo  a new peak Timeform rating of 124 which is seven pounds superior to his prior master figure of 117 recorded the run prior.

It was an impressive performance by the imported galloper who set a new course record for the 2000m journey at Doomben, stopping the clock at 2.02.03 on the Good 3 surface.

His efforts rate higher than the previous five year winning average of the event which was taken out by Scenic Shot  twice in 2011 and 2009 with figures of 122 and 120 respectively.

Metal Bender  claimed the Doomben Cup in 2010 running to a figure of 123.

Mawingo's latest winning effort sees him pass the first ballot clause for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October, a race which trainer Anthony Freedman believes the galloper would be perfectly suited to.

Connections in the coming days now need to make the decision of whether Mawingo gets the chance to pass the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup by contesting the Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 9.

While Hall Of Fame trainer Lee Freedman has four Caulfield Cup wins and five Melbourne Cup successes to his name, younger brother Anthony appears to have a great chance of opening his major tally this spring.

The Freedman charge at this stage will be spearheaded by Mawingo and 2011 Melbourne Cup placegetter Lucas Cranach.
