A Passionate Farewell For James Cummings

The James Cummings-trained Burning Passion provided the late sire Northern Meteor with his 23rd stakes winner when he won the G3 WJ Healy Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

The five-year-old delivered a farewell stakes win for the 29-year-old Cummings, who moves from public training to head trainer for Godolphin in Australia on July 8.

Fittingly Burning Passion Horseform boasts a Gooree Stud pedigree, that nursery being his biggest supporter since he became a trainer in his own right after the death of his grandfather Bart Cummings.

G1 winner Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) was one of best sprinters bred and raced by Gooree and was a raging success at stud before his early death from colic at Widden Stud in 2013 at the age of eight after four seasons at stud.

From four crops Northern Meteor has sired 23 stakes winners including the G1 winners, Romantic Touch, Cosmic Endeavour, Zoustar, Speak Fondly, Shooting To Win and Amanpour. His youngest remaining progeny are rising four-year-olds.

Burning Passion has been a credit to Cummings, winning three of his past four starts including his two starts at the Brisbane carnival.

Raced by a Darby Racing syndicate, Burning Passion is a brother to G1 JJ Atkins Stakes winner Romantic Touch from the family of G1 winners Desert War (Desert King) and Laser Hawk (Artie Schiller) – all trained by Gai Waterhouse for Gooree before Cummings became the main Australian trainer for Gooree owner Eduardo Cojuangco.

Cummings is married to Cojuangco’s granddaughter Monica. Cummings will have one more runner next week before taking over the Godolphin operation as the replacement for John O'Shea.

Burning Passion (Northern Meteor x Dearness by Snippets) was purchased last year from the Sydney Autumn Thoroughbred Sale as a tried horse for $24,000.

He has now six of his 21 starts with seven placings and has earned prize money of $421,430.

Burning Passion is one of six named foals out of juvenile winner Dearness (Snippets). His half-brother Romantic Touch was sold to Hong Kong after his JJ Atkins Stakes success and has since been placed in G2 company at Sha Tin.

Dearness is a three-quarter sister to Listed winner Actress (Snippets) and a half-sister to multiple G1 winner Desert War, Laser Hawk and stakes-placed Our Desert Warrior (Desert King) and Wookah (Encosta De Lago).

Actress is the second dam of Cummings’s recent stakes-placed sprinter Tactical Advantage (Bel Esprit).

Dearness has had five foals to race, all of whom have won, including A Little Prayer (Rock Of Gibraltar) who was bought by Darby Bloodstock for $36,000 in foal to Artie Schiller at this year’s Australian Broodmare Sale from the Gooree Park Stud draft.

She has has an unraced two-year-old filly by Fastnet Rock who was in training with Cummings and a yearling colt by Smart Missile.

She was covered by Exceed And Excel last spring.

RED DAZZLER’s consistent Queenslander Rudy took his prize money earnings past $1 million with a game Group 3 win in the $200,000 Tattersall’s Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

The rising seven-year-old, who won the G2 Villiers Stakes at Randwick in 2014, is trained at the Gold Coast by Helen Page and had not won since a Listed win in Brisbane last winter but had been placed at four of his last seven starts including a third in the G1 Doomben Cup.

“It’s a Queensland win - he is by a Queensland sire, out of a Queensland mare, owned in Queensland and trained in Queensland," Page said.

Owner-breeder Tom Clarke races Rudy in partnership with his brothers David and Don. He left for the UK last week to attend the Royal Ascot.

Page said Rudy Horseform, a rising 7YO, would be spelled and aimed at the Sydney and Melbourne carnivals in the spring.

Rudy (Red Dazzler x Go On Now Go by Success Express) has won nine of his 49 starts with 13 placings.

He is one of seven stakes winners by the Eureka Stud stallion Red Dazzler, a son of red Ransom. He is also the sire of G1 Queensland Oaks winner Tinto, G3 winner Red Eclipse and Listed winner Pardoe.

Rudy is from the seven-time winner Go On Now Go, a half-sister to The Girlfriend (Spinning World), the dam of Listed winner and G1 placed Mister Milton (Snippetson).

Rudy is one of four winners produced by Go On Now Go and his second dam Survive (Marauding) is a half-sister to the stakes placed Allicious (Zeditave). Allicious has produced eight foals for four winners.

Go On Now Go has a 2YO filly by Denman and a yearling filly by Helmet. She was covered by Red Dazzler again last spring.

Ubet W.J. Healy Stakes , 1200m
Race Synopsis: Consistent James Cummings-trained gelding Burning Passion, a winner of six (with seven placings) from 21 starts, advanced from winning a Benchmark 95 (1200m) at Eagle Farm on 27 May when having his second run this preparation to take out his first Group race here. He began well from his inside barrier (1) enjoyed a good trip in fourth place on the rails before getting through to take the lead at the 300m. He then fought back to score well. The $26.00 chance Irish Constabulary raced in eighth place, on the rails, switched across heels and into clear running at the 300m. He challenged at the 200m and kept fighting well for a good second. Too Good To Refuse raced towards the tail of the field (as usual) and was back in tenth place at the home turn before running on well for third, appreciating the fast early tempo. The favourite Deploy raced in seventh place, moved up (deep) from the 600m, put in a run (wide out) at the 300m and kept making ground, without threatening for (3.1 lengths) fourth, Flippant was a handy fifth most of the way and did well in holding that position to the post while the top weight (60.5kg) Dothraki had a hard run, caught deep in third place on a solid tempo, before finishing a sound (3.8 lengths) sixth after working most of the way.
