Araldo Junior Makes It 44 For Medicean

Imported stayer Araldo Junior became the 44th individual stakes winner for his UK-based sire Medicean when he won the Listed Queensland Cup over 3200 metres at Caloundra.

Medicean, a son of Machiavellian standing at Chveley Park Stud in England, has sired eight individual G1 winners including Nannina, Dutch Art, Siyouma and Bayrir.

The lightly raced Araldo Junior Horseform (Medicean x Alanda by Lando) won his sixth race and third in Australia, taking his prize money from 23 starts to $280,135.

He raced as Aldo in Germany where he won three of his five starts up to 2800 metres in 2014 and was sourced by Moroney after his older half brother Araldo (High Chaparral) died after a tragic accident after running seventh in the 2014 Melbourne Cup for the Flemington trainer.

Araldo won the Listed Bart Cummings at Flemington for Moroney after beginning his career in Germany.

He then ran seventh in the 2014 Melbourne Cup before but had to be euthanised after he broke a pastern in his right hind leg when he kicked a fence returning to his stall after the running of the race.

Araldo and Araldo Junior are sons Alanda (Lando), a three-quarter sister to Amore (Lando), the dam of German Listed winner Amare (Hernando) and a half-sister to G2 winner Abitara (Rainbow Quest) and stakes placed Abacco (Polish Precedent), Adito (Konigsstuhl) and Armstrong (Niniski).

Alanda’s six foals to race have all won while Araldo Junior’s second dam Arastou (Surumu) was champion 3YO filly in Germany in 1992, winning four races including two at G3 level.

Araldo Junior won the Benalla Cup at just his third Australian start but had not won since June last year when successful over 2500m at Flemington.

Moroney has now trained the winner of the Queensland Cup three times with Tinseltown (2011), Mister Impatience (2015) and Araldo Junior (2017).

Pool Pro Queensland Cup , 3200m
Race Synopsis: Mike Moroney-trained, German import Araldo Junior put up a solid staying effort in achieving his first stakes success over 3200m here. He travelled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, behind a steady tempo, before moving up well nearing the home turn. He raced to the front at the 200m and then drew away to score decisively. The favourite My Diamantine raced in eighth place, one off the rails, commenced a good run (deep) approaching the home turn to challenge at the 200m. She then fought on well for a good second, albeit without troubling the winner. Pop ‘N’ Scotch was midfield early on before making a midrace move to be fifth (wide, without cover) at the 1000m. He went to third at the 100m and then fought nicely to hold that position to the post, going well after working during the race.
