Atkins Triumph For Redoute's Choice

The JJ Atkins Stakes at Doomben was a triumph for Redoute’s Choice with the champion sire appearing in the pedigrees of all three placegetters in the Group 1 feature for two-year-olds.

Redoute’s Choice has a new star in the exciting winner The Autumn Sun Horseform, an unbeaten colt who promises to become a G1 winner as a 3YO after he beat the classy pair Zousain Horseform, himself a G2 winner at Doomben last month, and Fundamentalist Horseform.

Redoute’s Choice also appears as the dam sire of Zousain’s sire Zoustar and his son Not A Single Doubt is responsible for the filly Fundamentalist, who fought hard to add a G1 placing to her Listed win in Adelaide April.

Trainer Chris Waller prepares both The Autumn Sun and Zousain and was quick to confirm the Caulfield Guineas, won by Redoute’s Choice himself in 1999, will be the winner’s major spring target.

The Autumn Sun, unbeaten in three starts, is the 158th stakeswinner for Redoute’s Choice and became his 33rd G1 winner with Saturday’s success.

He is also the 38th 2YO stakeswinner and 9th juvenile G1 winner by the great sire who is preparing for his 19th season at Arrowfield Stud.

The three-time Australian champion sire has posted at least one G1 winner every season since 2004/05 and his lifetime stakeswinners to runners strike rate is just over 12%.

The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice x Azmylna by Galileo) was bred by the partnership of the Aga Khan Studs and Arrowfield.

He is the second G1 winner bred by the Aga Khan Studs-Arrowfield partnership after Whisky Baron, last season’s champion middle distance horse in South Africa.

The Autumn Sun’s dam Azmiyna is an unraced half-sister of European champion and four-time G1 winner Azamour.

He was offered alongside Golden Slipper winner Estijaab in the Arrowfield draft at the 2017 Australian Easter Yearling Sale where he was bought for $700,000 by Waller, agent Guy Mulcaster and Hermitage Thoroughbreds.

The Waller-Mulcaster team returned to the Easter Sale this year to purchase the Snitzel filly from Azmiyna for $1.3 million.

Azmiyna also has a weanling colt by Not A Single Doubt and is again in foal to Snitzel.

Hermitage Thoroughbred’s manager Oliver Koolman said the colt was bought in the hope he could develop into a classic 3YO.

“We went with the plan to buy a Derby winner,” Koolman said.

“Guy Mulcaster identified him and had him on a shortlist. He was one of the first through the ring on that list.

“I’m not sure if we get to a Derby with him with other factors at play but he’s a very exciting horse.”

R6 DOOMBEN 9 June 2018
J.J. Atkins 2 , 1600m
Race Synopsis: The Autumn Sun remains unbeaten after three starts, quickly advancing to take out this Group One feature impressively. He settled back in ninth place, improved (wide with cover) from the 800m but was still conceding the leaders about six lengths as he fanned deep at the home turn. He then put in strong run (in the centre of the track) and finished far too well to score by a neck, going away. He is a talented colt with a very bright future. His Chris Waller-trained stablemate Zousain raced in seventh place, tracked up (wide with cover) nearing the 600m, got through to challenge at the 200m and after hitting the front briefly at the 100m, fought really well for a very good second. Lindsay Park-trained filly Fundamentalist raced in fifth place (between runners), moved up at the home turn, challenged at the 200m and did very well in fighting on for third in a good performance in this class. Sesar settled near the tail of the 14-horse field, was still well back before going deep on straightening. He then kept running on very well to take (2.1 lengths) fourth, in a really good effort stepping up to 1600m here.
