Classy Guineas Win By Grunt

Lightly raced Karaka Premier Sale graduate Grunt has emerged as one of Australian racing’s brightest three-year-old stars after his impressive win in Saturday’s $1 million Australian Guineas at Flemington.

With Damien Oliver in the saddle, the Mick Price-trained colt provided the late Waikato Stud-based stallion O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) with his 13th Group One winner when he defeated the Darren Weir-trained Peaceful State (Animal Kingdom) by half a length with Bring Me Roses (High Chaparral) third.

O’Reilly, who died in 2014, is the sire of 88 stakes winners.

Grunt (O’Reilly x Ruqqaya by Van Nistelrooy) has now had five starts for four wins and a placing, banking $737,250 in prize money – more than three times his $220,000 purchase price at the 2016 NZB Premier Sale at Karaka where he was claimed by Mick Price Racing and Cameron Cooke Bloodstock.

It was Mick Price’s second G1 win with a Karaka graduate this season, having also claimed the Caulfield Guineas in the spring with $180,000 Premier Sale purchase Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt).

“They were always going to be nice horses,” Price said. “They’re colts, and I like getting colts to be Group 1 winners and making sires of them.

“Grunt isn’t furnished yet. He’s going to be a really good four-year-old.”

Grunt is raced by R & C Legh Racing Pty Ltd, Wright Racing, Gurners Bloodstock Co, Mr R Smith, Mr G Pulitano, Mr S Tsalikidis and Mr C Cortese.

Grunt is one of three named winners out of the two-time-winning mare Ruqqaya, a half-sister to Cox Plate winner and sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park).

He is also a half-brother to the stakes-placed mare Addison (Jimmy Choux) while Ruqqaya has a Savabeel yearling filly.

She was covered by first season sire Tivaci last spring.

Race Synopsis: The Mick Price-trained/New Zealand-bred colt Grunt is now the winner of four of five starts and he put up a really smart effort in advancing quickly through the classes to score here at Group One level. He was quickly away from his wide barrier (16) and was settled in a good spot, sixth (one off the rails) by Damien Oliver, tracking a fast pace. He moved up nicely at the 400m, hit the front at the 100m and went on to score impressively. Peaceful State raced back in eighth place, tracking the eventual winner. He improved nicely rounding the home turn, challenged at the 100m and fought on really well for a very good second. Bring Me Roses settled in fifth place, on the rails, from her inside barrier (1). She went to a distant second on turning for home and kept battling on well to hold the minor placing. Villermont raced in ninth place, improved (deep) from the 700m, put in a good run in the centre of the track from the 300m and kept fighting on well for (3.5 lengths) fourth. The favourite Cliff's Edge worked hard in the early stages from his wide barrier (15) to take the lead. He then travelled along well at a solid pace (first 1000m 58.92), dashed clear rounding the home turn but felt the effects of his taxing early efforts over the closing stages to finish (4.7 lengths) seventh. It was a gallant effort from a good colt who was asked to do too much too soon.
