Dark Dream Sparks WA Celebrations

Dark Dream’s memorable Queensland Derby win at Doomben will spark renewed interest in his sire All American, the Group One winning son of Red Ransom who is preparing to start yet another phase of his stud career in Western Australia.

All American will be standing at Geisel Park in WA for the second time in his career, having begun his breeding career at Arrowfield Stud in NSW before seasons in Victoria at Chatswood Stud and one in WA.

Geisel Park’s Eddie Rigg was part of the syndicate that purchased All American in 2016 and never lost faith in the stallion.

Rigg and his partners were blessed as they acquired All American just weeks before his outstanding filly Yankee Rose emerged as a star at the Sydney autumn carnival.

All American stood in WA in 2016 but was back in Victoria last year before Rigg moved to buy the 12-year-old stallion outright last month.

All American is now back in the spotlight after Dark Dream joined Yankee Rose as his second G1 winner with his deserving win in the Queensland Derby.

“It’s a great result for Geisel Park and for Western Australia,” Rigg declared.

All American, who has sired five stakes winners, served 113 mares in his first season at Geisel Park in 2016.

“We have some cracking weanlings on the farm and have consistently received favourable comments from clients. They wanted All American back and now he’s home for good.”

Dark Dream’s NSW breeder Mary Jane Basson has already sent the colt’s dam Buchanan Girl (Lion Hunter) to WA to be served for a second time by All American.

The mare, an $800 bargain buy at a Sydney broodmare sale, is in foal to Shamus Award.

Basson bred Dark Dream Horseform, now the winner of more than $600,000, after her older full sister was killed by a lightning strike as a yearling.

She took up an option for a free return to All American in 2013 while he was standing at Chatswood Stud with Buchanan Girl subsequently producing Dark Dream.

“Mary Jane rang and booked the mare into All American as soon as Eddie announced he would be coming back,” said Geisel Park studmaster Conor Dunlop.

The unraced Buchanan Girl has producd three other winners but Dark Dream is the first stakes winner from his first three dams.

His third dam Ohau Leica (Kingdom Bay) produced the G2-placed Willy Leica (Latarmiss) while his extended family includes G1 classic winners Nothin’ Leica Dane (Danehill) and Redding 9Nassipour) and G2 winner Duelled (Redoute’s Choice).

Buchanan Girl has a yearling colt by Arlington and a weanling colt by May’Haab.

Geisel Park will offer five All American foals at the Magic Millions Perth Winter Sale at Belmont on June 24.

“You can’t keep them all, we have another 14 on the farm,” Dunlop said.

All American will stand this spring at Geisle Park on a fee of $7700 with French G1 winner Vert De Grece (Verglas).

Eddie Rigg enjoyed a memorable Saturday when Mr Motown won the Listed Beaufine Stakes at Belmont.

He bred Mr Motown (Oratorio) in partnership with Ron Sayers and sold him for $120,000 at the 2013 Perth Magic Millions but later tok shares in the sprinjter who has now won more than $370,000.

The 6YO Mr Motown Horseform is the 15th individual black type winner by Oratorio among his 234 winners of 697 races for earnings over $21.64 million.

Queensland Derby 3 , 2200m
Race Synopsis: Favourite, the Kerry Parker-trained gelding Dark Dream, recent winner of the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) here on 12 May, again staged a strong staying effort in taking this Group One feature. He raced in sixth place, one off the rails, before moving up well (deep) coming to the 600m. He challenged at the 200m and finished a bit too well to score by a short neck at the post. Darren Weir-trained Heavenly Thought, winner of the Grand Prix (Gr 3, 2200m) here on 26 May, had a nice trip from his inside barrier (1) in third spot on the rails, got along the inner to hit the front on straightening and then fought gamely for a very good second. Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Youngstar again settled well back and remained near the tail of the 16-horse field before going deep on turning for home. She then responded with a very late finish for an eye-catching third. Augustus raced in seventh place, improved nicely behind the leaders approaching the home turn, was third on straightening and kept battling on nicely for (3.2 lengths) fourth.
