The NZ Derby was run for the first time in 1860 but only Nightmarch (1928) and Dalray (1951) have gone on to succeed in the Melbourne Cup.

Gingernuts Horseform joined them as a winner of New Zealand’s historic classic over 2400m on March 4 and proved he was a match for his Australian rivals when he won Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at his first start in Sydney.

His Rosehill Guineas win, beating the Randwick Guineas winner Inference Horseform with Victoria Derby Prized Icon Horseform out of the placings, adds to the growing aura surrounding the NZB Ready To Run Sale product who is raced dozens of members of the Te Akau Gingernuts Syndicate.

Gingernuts has now had eight starts for five wins and earnings of more than $A900,00. He will carry on to the $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 1 and earninbgs of more than $A900,000.

Sold first as a weanling for only $NZ5000 weanling and then for $NZ42,500 at the 2015 Ready to Run sale, Gingernuts was bred by the Fell family’s Goodwood Stud at Palmerston North in NZ.

He is by the shuttle sire Iffraaj (Zafonic) from Double Elle (Generous xTimberland Lass, by Oregon) and has now contested eight races for five wins.

Gingernuts is one of three winners out of Double Elle, the others being Rideitlikeustoleit (Alamosa) and Runway (Pins). He is one of only two Southern Hemisphere bred foals by Iffraaj to win beyond 2200m, the other being NZ St Leger winner If We Dance.

His dam Double Elle was a handy performer in Sydney up to 1800m but her sire Generous won the English and Irish Derbys and her grandam Windrift was an unraced Sir Tristram three-quarter sister to Western Australian Oaks winner Trappings.

Gingernuts’ fourth dam Devante was a New Zealand Oaks winner by Sobig, the sire of two-time Melbourne Cup winner Think Big, out of Skylit, a Wilkes half-sister to Lady Sybil, an NZ-bred winner of the VRC Oaks who also beat the colts in the Caulfield Guineas.

At stud in America, Lady Sybil produced four foals for three winners including Amerigo Lady (13 wins, Hollywood Oaks) and Brigand, a G2 winner by Noholme. Brigand enjoyed a successful stud career standing at Waikato Stud in New Zealand,

Gingernuts is among seven G1 winners by Iffraaj and is the second sired by him in NZ. Iffraaj was a visitor to New Zealand for five seasons from 2009 to 2013.

His first NZ-bred G1 winner was Turn Me Loose, winner of the NZ 2000 Guineas, VRC Emirates Stakes and MRC Futurity Stakes.

Iffraaj ran 13 times over four years for seven wins with six of his wins being seven furlongs. He won three G1 races and was second in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket.

Iffraaj is standing at Dalham Hall Stud in the UK.

Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas 3 , 2000m
Race Synopsis: The New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Gingernuts was impressive at his Australian debut in scoring a very strong win here. He settled back in tenth place, moved up smartly from the 600m, was a distant third on straightening, got to the front at the 200m and then went on to score decisively, staking claims for the upcoming ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in the process. The Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Inference settled back in ninth place, improved from the 600m, was a distant fourth at the 300m and kept running on well for second without threatening the winner. So Si Bon was sixth, one off the rails, made a wide move nearing the home turn and went to a distant second on turning for home. He then battled on quite well to take the minor placing. Anaheim raced in last place in the 12-horse field, went deep coming to the home turn and made ground for (4.3 lengths) fourth. Harper’s Choice soon went to the front and set up a big lead coming to the 600m. He was overtaken at the 300m and then held on for (4.4 lengths) fifth after running a bold race while Impavido was near last, went deep from the 600m and kept battling on solidly for (5.9 lengths) sixth in a promising effort at only his fifth race start.
