Great Shot Fires For WA Owners

Railway Stakes winner Great Shot has become a dream horse for his Perth owners Frank and May Edwards.

Great Shot was purchased by the couple for $31,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. On Saturday his stakes earnings flew past $1.2 million when he won the $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot.

Great Shot Horseform has now won eight of his 24 career starts including four at stakes level.

The result was a triumph for the WA breeding industry with Great Shot and runner-up Black Heart Bart bred and sold locally.

Great Shot, a 5YO gelded son of Magnus, was offered and sold through the draft of Scenic Lodge.

Black Heart Bart Horseform (Blackfriars) also came off the farm and is also a graduate of the Perth Magic Millions sale.

Great Shot (Magnus x Satin Covers by Dr Grace) is a half-brother to six winners including Listed winner Gawne (Flying Spur)

and Nine Covers (Twining), the dam of G3 winner Casino Dancer (Casino Prince).

Satin Covers, a four-time winner, is out of the G1 winner Satin Sand (Buena Shore), also the dam of South African G3 winner Da-Man (Danehill).

Satin Sand is a half-sister to G3 winner Western Magic (WesternSymphony).

Satin Cover was retired from broodmare duties in 2016.

The win provided Magnus (Flying Spur) with his third Group One winner, joining Malaguerra and Magnifisio.

Magnus is also the sire of Saturday’s Doomben winner Magnufighter, who is heading to the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in January.

Magnufighter was an $85,000 purchase by McLachlan Racing from the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Redoute’s Choice filly Perfect Jewel rebounded from her first career loss to win the G2 WA Guineas at Ascot.

The Grant and Alana Williams-trained three-year-old won her first three career starts including the Listed Belgravia Stakes before a disappointing fourth in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes.

On Saturday Perfect Jewel Horseform (Redoute’s Choice x Star Encounter by Jeune), sprinted hard to the line to score by three quarters of a length from Achernar Star (Gingerbread Man) and Art Series (Sebring).

Despite Perfect Jewel’s impressive victory in the Group Two, owner Bob Peters was unwilling to commit the filly to a start in the G1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on December 9.

Perfect Jewel has now won four of her five career starts and 432,280 prize money.

The three-year-old filly’s dam Star Encounter also produced Listed winner Royal Star and the G2 winner and G1-placed Star Exhibit.

The family features G1 winner Bravery and G2 winner Brave Prince.

The Lindsey Smith-trained Trap For Fools became the 11th iindividual stakes winner for former shuttle sire Poet's Voice when he won the Listed WATC Tattersall's Cup at Ascot.

Poet's Voice now stands in the Northern Hemisphere at Dalham Hall in Newmarket.

Smith said the 4YO Trap Of Fools (Poet’s Voice x Old Money by Old Spice) may now be aimed at the G2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on New Year’s Day.

The Adam Durrant-trained 8YO veteran Zuccheros (Hurricane Sky x Derring by Redding) became the 20th stakes winner for his sire Hurricane Sky when he won the Listed Carbine Club Stakes at Ascot.

Durrant completed a stakes double at Ascot when Celebrity Dream Horseform (Thorn park x Valpolicella by Red Ransom) won the Listed Jungle Mist Classic, becoming the 28th individual stakes winner for her late sire Thorn Park.

Thorn Park was New Zealand's champion sire in 2011. He died in 2012 from a hoof infection.

The well-related Celebrity Dream was a $260,000 purchase at the 2014 Karaka Premier Sale and has now won six of her 13 starts for $240,750 prize-money.

Celebrity Dream is a daughter of Valpolicella, winner of three races including the G3 Manawatu Classic and Listed Champagne Stakes.

Valpolicella is the dam of four foals to race, three of them winners and now three of them stakes winners.

Vavasour (Redoute’s Choice) won the G2 Sir Tristram Fillies’ Classic, G3 Counties Cup and G3 Waikato Cup while Vilanova (Commands) won the G2 Autumn Classic, G3 Grand Prix, Listed Tattersalls Club Cup and Listed Star Way Stakes.

Race Synopsis: After placings in three of his four runs this preparation, the locally trained gelding Great Shot scored a surprise $31 win, his first Group success in 24 starts. He was smartly away, went to the front and then set a good tempo (first 1000m 60.15) with last year’s winner (Scales Of Justice) at his girth. He was challenged by a number of runners on turning for home but he kept fighting back gamely under 53.5kg to win well. The top weight (59kg) Black Heart Bart raced in eighth place, moved up (deep) from the 600m, challenged at the home turn and fought well for a close second in a strong effort, conceding 5.5kg to the winner. Favourite Tom Melbourne had a good trip from his inside barrier (1), racing in third place on the rails. He got along the inner and briefly looked the winner at the 200m but finished a close-up third after seeming to have had every chance, recording his sixth placing in seven starts this preparation. Variation settled in seventh place, between runners, from his good barrier (3). He got into clear running at the 200m and then ran on well for (0.8 lengths) fourth. Material Man was a handy fourth to the home turn, challenged at the 200m and did well in batting on gamely for fifth, beaten just under a length. Pounamu ran on well from back in the field for (1.8 lengths) sixth while Scales Of Justice disappointed in finishing (4.5 lengths) 12th after weakening from the home turn.
