Mongolian Wolf Wins Packer Plate
Classy Pluck three-year-old Mongolian Wolf showed he is enjoying life back in Australia by winning the G3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick on Saturday.
Australian-bred Mongolian Wolf had done all his prior racing in New Zealand, before his transfer to Darren Weir’s stable in Victoria after he was purchased last month by Australian Bloodstock.
He was first sold as a yearling at the 2015 Classic Sale in Sydney and then made a sale ring return as a 2YO when offered by Regal Farm at the 2015 Karaka Ready to Run Sale in New Zealand where he made $NZ200,000.
Originally trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman for owners the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry, Mongolian Wolf won three of his eight starts in New Zealand and ran third behind Gingernuts in the G2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie.
The three-year-old contested last month’s G1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie, after which he was sold to Australian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell and Jamie Lovett.
He made his Australian debut at Randwick on Saturday where he joined fellow Karaka graduates Gingernuts, Jon Snow and Bonneval as major winners at the Sydney carnival.
"Luke (Murrell) and Jamie (Lovett) pick the right horses, they get it right more than they get it wrong and they're getting the rewards," Weir said.
"They earmarked this horse three or four weeks ago.
"They said we were going to try to buy him and he'll be a great Queensland Derby horse. The way he won today, you'd have to say he's on track for that."
Mongolian Wolf was bred in Australia by Peter Arvanitis using Pluck to cover Oomaroo (Tale Of The Cat). Arvanitis sold him as a foal to Tas Rielley of Basinghall Farm who pin-hooked him for a profit as a yearling before Regal Farm did even better by selling him at Karaka.
Mongolian Wolf is the third 3YO son of Pluck to leave the Baker/Forsman stable this year after the recent sales of stablemates Gasoline and Pluck That to Hong Kong.
Pluck (More Than Ready) has already sired G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Aspect this season.
