Nine Up For Pierro

Leading second season stallion Pierro sired his ninth stakes winner when promising colt Commander won the Listed Phoenix 2YO Stakes at the Sunshine Coast.

The John Thompson-trained Commander (Pierro x Ephemera by More Than Ready) is a homebred for Paul Fudge’s Waratah Thoroughbreds and was having only his third career start.

Commander Horseform joins Pierro’s stakes winners including G1 winners Levendi and Pinot, G2 winner Action and G3 winners Tulip and Pierata.

Thompson will confer with Paul Fudge about whether to back up Commander in next Saturday’s G1 JJ Atkins Stakes at Doomben.

"He's in the race and he showed today that 1600 metres is no problem. He likes to get his toe in the ground on wet tracks so that's a plus as well," Thompson said.

Commander is the second foal and second winner for her stakes-placed dam Ephemera, bought by Waratah Thoroughbreds from the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2011 for $525,000.

Ephemera is a half-sister to G2 winner Running Tall from a family that features G1 winner and champion US 2YO Midshipman and multiple G1 winner Frosted.

Pierro is on track to add the champion Australian second season sire title to the first season title he won last year.

Sebring mare Egg Tart recorded her first win in 12 months when she outclassed her rivals in the G2 PJ O’Shea Stakes at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Egg Tart had been winless since her G1 double in the Australasian Oaks in Adelaide and Queensland Oaks in Brisbane last season.

Her current campaign was extended after she finished runner-up in the G1 Doomben Cup on May 19 when she was beaten by her Chris Waller-trained stablemate Comin’ Through.

Her record now stands at seven wins and three placings from 17 starts with prizemoney of $1.1 million.

Egg Tart Horseform (Sebring x Mrs Windsor by King’s Best) was a $40,000 Easter purchase from the Jorson Farm draft by Anton Koolman and Heritage Thoroughbreds, the same team responsible behind this year’s Queensland Oaks winner Youngstar.

She is one of four named foals out of the unraced Mrs Windsor, a half-sister to the G1 winners Coronation Day (Bletchingly) and Heart Ruler (Marscay).

Mrs WIndsor’s dam Born To Be Queen won the G1 AJC Metropolitan.

Mrs Windsor died last spring, leaving a two-year-old gelding by Shamus Award.

Egg Tart is among 44 stakes winners by Sebring (More Than Ready) and and his 12th this season. She is on the honour roll alongside his G1 winners Dissident, Criterion and Lucky Bubbles.

Consistent sprinter The Monstar relished his favoured wet track conditions to add the G2 Moreton Cup at the Sunshine Coast to his high class record.

It was the third stakes victory for the Brett Cavanough-trained 7YO gelding by California Dane.

The Monstar Horseform (California Dane x Sirocco Mist by Brocco) has won 12 races from 46 starts, with another 13 placings and $731,140 in prize money.

He is one of six stakes winners for his late sire California Dane (Danehill) including the G1 winner Rebel Dane now at stud.

The Monstar is one of seven winners from eight foals to race for Sirocco Mist, a half-sister to the stakes-placed Al Samoud (Desert Prince).

The gelding’s second dam All Stormy (Storm At Sea) won seven races and is a half-sister to four-time G1 winner All Our Mob (What A Guest), G1 Thousand Guineas winner All Time High (Flying Spur) and G2 winner All Archie (Archregent).

Sirocco Mist died in 2015.

Race Synopsis: Brett Cavanough-trained sprinter The Monstar took his record to 12 wins and 13 placings from 46 starts in taking out his first Group win and his third stakes success in scoring here. He showed his customary pace and soon crossed to the lead. He then settled nicely at a reasonable tempo and kept fighting back when challenged in the straight to score a game win, again showing his liking for affected going. Progressive Darren Weir-trained filly Platinum Angel raced in sixth place (between runners), got a split at the 300m, challenged at the 200m and battled gamely for a good second, later surviving a protest from connections of Calanda. He had a nice trip from his good barrier (3) racing in third place on the rails, before getting through to challenge shortly after straightening. He then kept battling on well for a close-up third. Connections protested unsuccessfully against the runner-up for interference over the latter stages.
