Perry Toasts His Champagne Success

Trainer Paul Perry was full of self-satisfaction after a son of the horse he took to international success won the G1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

The Mission, very much in the mould of his sire Choisir, ran his rivals ragged to score a dominant victory in the final leg of Sydney’s 2YO Triple Crown.

The Paul Perry trained colt won the G3 Schweppervescence Stakes over 1400 metres at Rosehill two starts back before racing without luck in the G1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes when sixth to Invader.

On Saturday The Mission Horseform (Chosir x My Amelia, by Redoute’s Choice) set a solid pace powered to the line to beat Invader by more than two length, taking his record to two wins and two placings from eight starts with prizemoney topping $400,000.

The Mission achieved what his sire could not as Choisir was third in the Champagne Stakes back in 2002.

However Choisir went to become the world’s best sprinter under Perry’s training, posting memorable wins in the G2 King’s Stand Stakes and G1I Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot when he paved the way for the success Australia has enjoyed at the carnival over the last 15 years.

The Mission, the 12th G1 winner by Choisir, was a bargain $32,500 purchase by Perry at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale Book II from the Edinglassie Stud draft.

Bred by Richard Pegum, he is a half-brother to the G3 placed Smart Amelia from the winning Redoute’s Choice mare My Amelia, a daughter of G1 AJC Champagne Stakes winner Carry On Cutie.

The Mission's half sister Smart Amelia ran third in the G3 James HB Carr Stakes on Saturday’s Randwick card.

Perry confirmed the colt would head to the paddock for a well deserved break ahead of a spring campaign.

"Hopefully a race like the Caulfield Guineas will suit him for sure. He's certainly on his way," Perry said.

The Mission is another successful Magic Millions Racing Women graduate as he is raced by four ladies – Ms CG Collis, Mrs BJ Grant, Mrs JP Poole & Mrs DM McCarthy.

PROMISING Smart Missile colt Debellatio won the G3 WATC Sires Produce Stakes at Ascot on Good Friday.

A last start third in the G2 Karrakatta Plate after missing the start, the Fred Kersely trained Debellatio Horseform went straight to the front and raced away to win by two and a half lengths taking his overall record to two wins and two placings from five starts with prizemoney of $189,800.

A $30,000 Sydney Easter purchase for Chevaux Bloodstock from the Yarraman Park draft, Debellatio was re-offered at the Sydney Ready to Run Sale as a two year-old where he made $110,000.

Bred by Harry Mitchell and foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Debellatio is a half-brother to stakes-winner Devoirs and is the best of four winners from the G2 winner Velasco.

Champagne Stakes 2 , 1600m
Race Synopsis: The Paul Perry-trained The Mission scored a good all-theway win on a track which seemed to be favouring on-pace runners. He went to the front and then ran along at a very good tempo considering the conditions (first 1000m 62.04), setting up a clear lead. He still held a good break on straightening and went on to score decisively. The favourite Invader settled well back in fifth place, one off the rails, before improving nicely (deep) coming to the home turn. He went to second at the 200m but he could not make any further ground on the leader and then fought on to hold that position to the post. Whispered Secret raced back third place, improved (under riding) at the home turn to be a distant second on straightening. She then kept battling on soundly to hold third placing.
