Scott Darby Strikes Gold In The Slipper

Scott Darby, the founder and managing director of Darby Racing and the man behind the eclectic syndicate that races Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign, has built an enviable syndications record since establishing the business 10 years ago.

Darby boasts the distinction of ‘finding’ two of Australia’s best juveniles in successive seasons in Yankee Rose and She Will Reign.

Both fillies were sourced as bargains from the Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, with multiple G1 winner Yankee Rose costing only $10,000 and She Wil Reign slightly dearer at $20,000.

Yankee Rose Horseform has subsequently won $2.1 million from her nine outings which include victories in the G1 ATC Sires’ Produce and G1 Spring Champion Stakes and second in the 2016 Golden Sliper Stakes..

However she has been surpassed in the money stakes by She Will Reign, who made it four wins from five starts for earnings of more than $2.5 million when she won Saturday’s Golden Slipper for an excited group of 16 owners listed in the racebook.

“This is everything. This means so much to so many people,” Darby said after the Slipper victory.

“I don’t know where to start. It’s just amazing, it really is.

“She Will Reign’s syndicate is a totally different ownership group to that of Yankee Rose. We bought around 10 yearlings at the Classic Sale in Yankee Rose’s year and about the same number in 2016 when we got She Will Reign.

“We knew quite a bit about She Will Reign before we purchased her as her sire Manhattan Rain is also the sire of another of our good buys in Scarlet Rain.”

A Group 2 winning 2YO who was purchased by Darby for $100,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Scarlet Rain Horseform had won her first two starts by the time She Will Reign came along.

She Will Reign’s dam Courgette, a daughter of Charge Forward, was originally broken in by Darby racing manager Mark Holland.

After Courgette finished racing she was sent to Manhattan Rain while he was standing at Arrowfield Stud under on a foal share arrangement by long-time client Gary Bachell.

“After her birth She Will Reign was raised at Middlebrook Valley Lodge at Scone with whom we have a close relationship as well” Darby said.

“We knew quite a bit about her by the time she got into the sale ring.”

Manhattan Rain, a half-brother to Redoute’s Choice, will be standing his first season at his new home in Victoria at Phil Campbell’s Blue Gum Farm this spring after the stallion’s owners Teeley Assets decided relocate the G1-winning son of Encosta de Lago.

Campbell said there had been a rush of bookings to Manhattan Rain from breeders after She Will Reign won her early starts and he expects the sire will finish with a full book in the wake of the Golden Slipper giving the sire his first Australian G1 winner.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Campbell said. “We originally made a play for the horse before he was retired from racing and tried again last year.

“Teeley Assets were keen to re-locate him to Victoria and we were very keen to stand him. He’s a lovely type with good fertility and has settled in well since arriving.

“It’s worth remembering that the horse is only 11 years old and there’s so much upside.".

Apart from She Will Reign and G2 winner Scarlet Rain, who has won four races, Manhattan Rain is the sire of Whisky Baron, who won South Africa’s premier G1 event the Sun Met in January.

His other progeny include Group winners and stakes performers Wild Rain, Moonovermanhattan, Hattan Street, Crafty, Manapine, Ondina, Tango Rain, Man Of Choice, Promise To Reign, Manhattan Avenue, Boundary, Gibraltar Girl and Light Up Manhattan.

She Will Reign is a true Arrowfield Stud product as both Manhattan Rain and her dam sire Charge Forward were standing together at the Scone stud when she was conceived.

Charge Forward, a son of Red Ransom, was himself a close second to Dance Hero in the 2004 Golden Slipper.

A half-sister to She Will Reign by Shamus Award will be offered by Yarraman Park at next month’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

R7 ROSEHILL 18 March 2017
Longines Golden Slipper 2 , 1200m
Race Synopsis: She Will Reign scored an outstanding win here, her first at Group One level. She was midfield early on before improving along to inner to settle in fifth place on the rails. She continued through on the inside rounding the home turn, took the lead on passing the 300m and was untroubled from that point to win clearly. It was also a very good ride by Ben Melham. Frolic went back from her wide barrier (14) and settled in third last place in the 16-horse field. She stuck to the rails rounding the home turn, got through to fourth at the 200m and kept running on well for second, putting up a smart effort. Tulip raced back in tenth place (wide out), improved (deep) from the 600m, went to fifth (in the centre of the track) at the 200m and kept running on well, being fourth past the post but she was awarded third on protest after being hindered over the latter stages. Menari raced in fourth place, got to third at the 200m and then kept fighting on, being third past the post but was relegated to fourth after a protest for veering deeper in the latter stages. The favourite Houtzen was brilliantly away from her wide barrier (13) and soon crossed to the front. She then travelled well, held on nice advantage on straightening but was overtaken at the 300m and then held on for (5.7 lengths) fifth, her early efforts telling in the conditions over the final stages.
