Second Group One For English

Encosta De Lago’s high class mare English landed her second Group One win in Saturday’s Doomben Ten Thousand and is likely to target the $13 million Everest in the early spring before any thought is given to her retirement.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-year-old won the G1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick in 2016 and was a runner in the inaugural Everest last October.

Bred and raced by Newhaven Park Stud, she is also entered for the G1 Kingsford Smith Cup, G1 Stradbroke and G1 Tatts Tiara over the next five weeks of the Brisbane carnival.

English Horseform (Encosta De Lago x Court by Anabaa) has now won six times with five placings in her 25 starts for earnings of more than $3.5 million.

She is out of the the Newhaven park-bred dual G2 winner Court (Anabaa), a half-sister to stakes-placed Al Naifa (Redoute’s Choice) and the winning filly Puzzle (Shamardal).

Court is a daughter of Splish (Zeditave), who produced two winners from her only two foals while third dam La Papaya (Alleged) is a half-sister to the dual G1 winner and sire Grand Lodge (Chief’s Crown) and the stakes winner La Persiana (Daylami).

CLASSY 3YO Perast became the 26th stakes winner this season for champion sire Snitzel when he won the Listed Queensland Day Stakes at Doomben.

Snitzel is now one winner away from claiming the record for most stakeswinners in a season he currently shares with Danehill.

Perast Horseform (Snitzel x Thousand Veils by Zabeel) was a $100,000 buy for his trainer Paul Perry at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Maluka Farm.

Perast won the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude in the spring and is set to go on to the G2 Queensland Guineas on June 9.

Sheiswhatsheis Horseform (Bernardini x Cry Baby by Street Cry) is the 62nd stakes winner by her sire with her trainer Tony Gollan hoping her her owners may now reconsider and continue racing the mare.

THE Kerry Parker-trained Dark Dream (All American x Buchanan Girl by Lion Hunterwon the G3 Rough Habit Plate at Doomben.

Dark Dream Horseform is the fifth stakes winner by Al American, joining G1 winner Yankee Rose, Bachman, Zebulon and America Mon Amie as the stallion’s other stakes winners

Race Synopsis: Quality mare English, having her fourth run this preparation, scored her first win since taking out the Challenge Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Randwick just over 12 months ago in winning this Group One race, her second victory at that level. She began well from her inside barrier (1) and Tim Clark soon had her handily placed on the rails, just behind the leaders who were going at a strong pace. She then got along the inner at the 200m and finished too well to score a very good win. Impending travelled nicely in eighth place, before improving (wide with cover) from the 600m. He put in a good run (deep) on straightening, challenged at the 100m and kept running on gamely for second. Le Romain was trapped deep from his wide barrier (11) and moved up (still deep) to be third outside the leaders. He briefly got to the front at the 100m and then fought very well for third, staging an excellent effort after a wide trip. The favourite Redzel attempted to find the front but was caught outside the leader (Monsieur Gustave) travelling at a strong pace. He briefly got the upper hand at the 200m but then tired after his early efforts to finish fourth, beaten less than a length. Spieth raced back in ninth place and did well in running on nicely for (1.8 lengths) fifth in a promising effort, resuming here for the Lindsay Park training team while the second favourite In Her Time raced in sixth place and performed well below her best, just battling on for (2.5 lengths) ninth.
