Settling with only a few runners behind her Shamal Wind unleased her powerful sprint to take the 1100m race by three-quarters of a length from her Robert Smerdon-trained stablemate Under The Louvre.

Trainer Robert Smerdon credited bloodstock agent James Harron for the win as he brokered the sale of Shamal Wind Horseform to her current owners Rob and Donna Love and convinced him to give her another shot at a G1 win after two previous attempts at the Oakleigh Plate

She was originally sold for $55,000 to Aquanita Racing at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Saturday’s win took her earnings to more than $830,000 from eight wins and eight placings from 24 starts

Shamal Wind is the first foal from Firemaid, a US-bred winning half-sister by Machiavellian to stakes-winner Bezrin and to the dam of G2 winner Al Thankhira.

A grand-daughter of G1 winner My Darling One, Firemaid produced a Sebring colt last spring and is now in foal to Fastnet Rock.

Shamal Wind joins the likes of Starspangledbanner and Weekend Hustler as fellow Inglis Premier graduates to win the G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Dubawi is the sire of 84 stakes winners worldwide and is currently standing at Dalham Hall Stud in the UK on a fee of £125,000.

Smerdon said that Shamal Wind would not contest the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington in two weeks.

“I’m not too sure where we’ll go now. She may go to Sydney, maybe for a race like The Galaxy,” Smerdon said.

William Hill Oakleigh Plate , 1100m
Race Synopsis: Shamal Wind was eased from her wide barrier (14) and settled towards the rear of the 16-horse field, following a fast pace. Dwayne Dunn started his move rounding the home turn, kept her behind runners to the 300m then switched out. She then sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 50m and drew clear to win by almost a length and in fast time. Under The Louvre was just beyond midfield on the rails, made ground on the inside from the 300m, challenged at the 100m and fought on well for second. Fast ‘N’ Rocking settled near last from his difficult barrier (15). He switched across heels at the 200m and came with a strong run to finish a good third. Vain Queen had a good trip, seventh with cover, being suited by a fast tempo. She got a split at the 200m and battled on quite well for (1.7 lengths) fourth after seeming to have every chance. Atmospherical was sixth on the rails, got through to second at the 200m and battled on for (1.8 lengths) fifth. I’m All The Talk led at a fast pace, he grabbed a break on turning for home and only tired on passing the 100m for (2.8 lengths) sixth after running a bold race. The favourite Earthquake worked in the early stages from barrier ten and then raced outside the leader (I’m All The Talk) at a solid tempo. She was under pressure nearing the home turn and tired for (6.3 lengths) tenth at her first run since November.
