Shoals Becomes A Priceless Commodity

Fastnet Rock’s outstanding daughter Shoals is not only one of the best bred fillies racing in Australia but probably the most valuable.

The three year-old added a third Group One win, all achieved this season over distances from 1200m to 1600m, with a resounding victory at Morphettville on Saturday in the $1 million SAJC Ubet Robert Sangster Stakes.

The versatile Anthony Freedman-trained Shoals beat last year’s winner Secret Agenda to add the Ubet Classic to her earlier G1 wins in the VRC Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington and the ATC Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

A homebred for Arrowfield Stud and Jonathan Munz, Shoals boasts the impressive record of seven wins and two seconds from 10 starts with prizemoney of $2 million, a figure probably well short of her market value.

“She’s gone up a couple of levels and we’ll give Royal Ascot a lot of thought,” Freedman said.

“She’s an outstanding filly to win three Group Ones in 10 runs in one season. Not many do it,” Freedman said.

Shoals Horseform, who races in Jonathan Munz’s Pinecliff Racing colours, is the first foal from The Broken Shore, a Hussonet mare who was bought by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for $1.9 million at the Magic Millions Teeley Assets Dispersal in 2014.

A metropolitan winner, The Broken Shore is a half-sister to champion GI winners and sires Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain and Platinum Scissors as well as G3 winner Sliding Cube and stakes-winner Echoes Of Heaven.

Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar) is the dam of G2 winner and sire Rubick.

The Broken Shore is out of the acclaimed Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), a three quarter sister to G1 winner He’s No Pie Eater (Canny Lad) and a half-sister to G1 winners Umatilla (Miswaki) and Hurricane Sky (Star Watch)

The Broken Shore has been to Fastnet Rock in three seasons. Her current two year-old filly, a full sister to Shoals, is called Tides and is also in training with Anthony Freedman.

The yearling colt by Fastnet Rock from The Broken Shore topped the 2018 Australian Easter Yearling Sale last month when fetching $2.3 million to the bid of Anthony Freedman.

The Broken Shore most recently foaled a colt by Medaglia d’Oro and returned to Fastnet Rock last spring.

Race Synopsis: Top class three-year-old filly Shoals put up an impressive performance to clearly dominate here and won for the third time at Group One level - her seventh win in ten career starts and topping $2 million in earnings. From barrier 15 she began best but had to drop back, settling well back and wide from the 800m. Rider Tim Clark set her alight at the 500m and she flew around the field, turning in wide but travelling smoothly. Clark gave her a shake at the 300m and she bounded up alongside the leaders then put them away to win easily and impressively. Secret Agenda tracked the winner into the straight and although finishing very well, was no match for the winner yet finished a nice second. Mica Lil had no luck, was well back turning in and did not get clear until the 100m, bursting through a wall of runners to flash into third. True Excelsior had her chances and battled away to hold fourth, in advance of Whispering Brook who poked through nearer the fence, running on well for fifth.
