Snitzel And The Snowdens - A Winning Combination

Quality sprinter Redzel has earned him the accolade of top earner in 2016-17 for record-breaking champion sire Snitzel.

The Triple Crown-owned ever consistent Redzel recorded four stakes wins and two runner-up performances at Group level with his victory in the G1 Doomben Ten Thousand the undoubted highlight.

Redzel’s season started with a victory in the July Sprint and sparked a run of results which saw his earnings smash through the $1 million with his career prizemoney now standing at $1,194,450.

Wins at G3 level in the Resimax Stakes and Hall Mark Stakes and a Listed success in the Mumm Stakes preceded Redzel's G1 triumph in Brisbane in May.

He came within 0.2 lengths of a second success at G1 level when defeated by stablemate Russian Revolution in the Galaxy at Rosehill.

Redzel Horseform played a big part in Arrowfield Stud’s all-conquering sire Snitzel claiming the 2016/17 Champion Sire title with his total stallion earnings of $16.1 million an unprecedented haul for an Australian sire.

Snitzel equalled the record set by Danehill in delivering 26 single-season stakes winners and in the siring the first three home in the ATC Sires Produce he became the first stallion since 1982 to sire a G1 trifecta.

All three of Snitzel’s Australian G1 winners were prepared by Triple Crown’s trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, with Invader Horseform and Russian Revolution Horseform joining Redzel in winning on the highest stage.

The Snowdens were celebrating all season long as the trainers of five of Snitzel’s stakeswinners.

Jackson Beirs, the Snowdens racing manager, said: “We’re very fortunate our clients, including James Harron and his ownership group, Sheikh Khalifa, Triple Crown and the partnership between Newgate, SF Bloodstock, China Horse Club, Matthew Sandblom and Winstar, provided us with such high quality horses.

“Redzel had a meteoric rise after Peter and Paul found the key to him, and just let him run.

“Redzel’s Group One was a very satisfying result for Triple Crown who were early fans of Snitzel with Hot Snitzel Horseform and Flying Snitzel Horseform.

“They’re a perfect example of why syndication works, getting people into well-bred horses at affordable prices so they can compete against the richest owners and have a chance to win.”

Beirs said Sniztel colt Detective Horseform, who won a Flemington Listed Race last spring, has been sold to Hong Kong.

Snitzel’s final stakeswinner of the season was Calanda Horseform in the LR Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

“He will be seen this spring after a brief break,” Beirs said.

Beirs said there are obvious reasons why Snitzel’s progeny so successful.

“They’re just nice horses to be around, there’s no fuss with them, they eat, sleep and do their work,” he said.

“They’re really sound and durable, which is so important for Australian racing.“

The Snowden stable has a big team of new season 2YOs by Snitzel including colts out of Ultimate Fever (Gold Fever), Quench The Thirst (Encosta de Lago), Good Weekend (Hussonet) and Bondi Blonde (Red Ransom).

Other Snowden stars now in Hong Kong include Listed winner France Horseform (Redoute’s Choice) and G2 Todman Stakes winner Gunnison Horseform (Not A Single Doubt). His three-quarter sister by Snitzel is among the stable’s new 2YOs.

Also in the Snowden kindergarten are three Not A Single Doubt colts and also has the Redoute’s Choice 2YO brother to Pariah Horseform who was sold for $1.3 million as a yearling.

Beirs said the Kia Ora Stud owned mare Ravi Horseform (Redoute’s Choice x Mambo In Freeport), winner of the Listed Just Now Stakes and twice Group-placed in 2016/17, has stayed in training with the aim of adding more black type to her pedigree page.

“It was a toss-up whether to retire her or not, but she was very unlucky to only win one stakes race. She has that lovely Redoute’s Choice quality and has furnished into a beautiful mare.”

Gold Symphony, another Triple Crown owned sprinter, was the leading earner by Reward For Effort last season.

His two stakes triumphs in the Listed National Stakes at Canberra and the Listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill saw his career earning pass $500,000.
