Sunlight Eclipses Her Magic Millions Rivals

Multiple Group One winner Zoustar raced to the top of the first crop prizemoney table after his brilliant filly Sunlight eclipsed her rivals in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

Sunlight Horseform is the only winner to date by Zoustar, the G1-winning son of Northern Meteor who went to stud in 2015.

Zoustar is standing on a year-by-year basis at Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley and Woodside Park Stud in Victoria where he covered 173 mares in 2017 on a fee of $44,000. He returns to Widden Stud in 2018.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Sunlight (Zoustar x Solar Charged by Charge Forward) has now won her three of her four starts and $1,297,200 prize money, an amount that puts him well ahead of Spirit Of Boom in the race to be leading first season sire.

Sunlight is disputing favouritism with Breeders Plate winner Performer for the Golden Slipper Stakes with both youngsters possessing a common thread as both are out of mares by the Red Ransom stallion Charge Forward.

Sunlight was a $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from the Widden Stud draft by the partnership of Aquis Farm, McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Blue Sky Bloodstock.

Tony McEvoy paid $600,000 for Sunlight’s sister at the current Magic Millions Yearling Sale offered by Widden Stud. His yearlings averaged more than $277,000 at this year’s sale.

Sunlight is the fourth foal and third winner out of multiple G3 winner Solar Charged, making her a half-sister to the stakes placed juvenile winner Sheikha (Sebring) and the winner Solar Cry (Street Cry).

Solar Charged is a half-sister to the Listed Tasmanian Oaks winner Causeway Queen (Giant’s Causeway) and the stakes-placed mare Brave Soul (More Than Ready).

Solar Charged’s second dam is the Listed winner Aretha (Sir Dapper), a half-sister to Group-placed Power Symbol (Biscay), The American (Adirondack Holme) and G2 Silver Slipper Stakes placed Nun’s Chorus (Archregent).

Aretha is the dam of seven winners including the Listed winner Sir Linford (Last Tycoon) and G3 placed Soul Queen (Danehill).

Solar Charged produced a colt by Sebring last spring was again covered by Zoustar at Woodside Park in November.

Sunlight is owned entirely by female connections, who secured an additional $325,000 bonus as part of the Magic Millions’ Racing Women promotion.

It was the third time the winner of the MM Classic has picked up the Racing Women bonus.

Magic Millions 2yo Classic-R.L 2 , 1200m
Race Synopsis: In a race marred by severe early interference, Sunlight remains unbeaten in three starts in Queensland this preparation and staged a brilliant performance in winning here. She was again quickly away, narrowly missed trouble but still worked hard in the early stages before settling in second place, chasing the free-running leader (Ef Troop). She set out after the leader at the 300m, went to the front at the 100m and then went on to score impressively. Fullazaboot settled back in 12th place from his outside barrier (16), went deepest of all at the 300m and responded well to riding in coming with a late bid, being suited by the fast early pace, to take second. Outback Barbie settled midfield, got between runners on straightening, went to fourth at the 200m and then battled on nicely for third. Previously unbeaten colt Ef Troop again showed brilliant early pace and quickly crossed from his wide barrier (13), resulting in crowding to the early leaders, before dashing to a clear lead. He then set a hectic tempo (first 600m 33.65) and did well under the circumstances in holding on for (3.1 lengths) fourth. Secret Lady was quickly away but was involved in early trouble before settling back in fourth place. She then held on quite well for (4.8 lengths) fifth while the second favourite Jonker was handily placed but hit the rails heavily when crowded in the early stages for settling in sixth place on the rails. He then faded in the straight and was eased over the latter stages by Hugh Bowman to finish last.
