Supido In Super Form For The Spring

Trainer Michael Kent predicted that his classy Sebring sprinter Supido would be winning more Group races this spring after he overwhelmed his opposition in the G2 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

"It's good to get that win out of the way because it's his first stakes win. He's been Group 1 and Group 2 placed and I was dying to get him a stakes win," Kent said.

“It's the happiest I've been with him for a while. I think he's a Group 1 horse.”

Kent suggested the $1 million G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 26 would be a suitable target for Supido, a five-year-old entire.

“We’ll head to the Bletchingly Stakes in a fortnight and then see where we go from there, but I would like to get him back into a Group One race,” Kent said.

“He’s got the figures to run a mile but he’s got such a quick turn of foot we haven’t had to go there yet.”

Supido Horseform (Sebring x Lady Succeed by Brian’s Time) is the 31st individual stakes winner by his sire and the second in a week after his tough son Supply And Demand won Thursday’s Listed Grafton Cup over 2350m.

Supido has now won seven times from 13 starts and earned prize money of $471,150.

A $190,000 yearling from the Three Bridges Thoroughbreds draft, Supido was one of three winners on the Caulfield program bred by Gilgai Farm along with Nikitas (Snitzel) and Portion Control (Snitzel).

Supido is a son of the the winning Japanese bred and raced mare Lady Succeed (Brian’s Time), a member of Gilgai Farm’s small band of 20 mares that produce only 12–15 foals annually but have included champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) and Caulfield Cup winner Jameka (Myboycharlie).

Supido is one of four foals to race from Lady Succeed and is her first stakes winner.

Lady Succeed is a half-sister to Japanese Listed winner Shinko Caldo (Silver Hawk) and French Listed winner Esperero (Forty Niner).

Supido’s second dam is the G2 Prix d’Astarte winner Hydro Caldo (Nureyev) and his third dam is the G3 winner Coup De Folie, who won four races in Europe.

Supido’s pedigree features G1 winner and sire Exit To Nowhere (Irish River) and his half-brother Machiavellian (Mr Prospector), the champion 2YO in Europe in 1989.

Lady Succeed produced a sister to Supido by Sebring last year.

Race Synopsis: Consistent Mick Kent-trained sprinter Supido scored a smart first up win, taking his record to seven wins from 13 starts in taking out his first Group success here. He was ridden patiently by Luke Nolen, racing in sixth place, but was briefly held up nearing the home turn before being switched into clear running at the 300m. He then sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 50m and appeared to win with something in hand. Daytona Grey raced in fifth place on the rails, looked dangerous when he took an inside run to challenge at the 100m and then fought well for a very good second. Murt The Flirt raced in last place in the eight-horse field, went deep at the home turn and came with a strong run for a late-closing third in a good first up effort. Divine Ten raced in third place, wide without cover, and held on well for (1.9 lengths) fourth while Lord Of The Sky led the field to the 200m, going at quite a good tempo, before finishing (3 lengths) fifth in a sound first up run.
