Sweet Taste Of Success For Charge Forward Mare

The connections of valuable Charge Forward mare Slightly Sweet face a choice between more racing or retirement for the five-year-old following her third black type win in the Listed Winter Stakes at Rosehill.

Slightly Sweet Horseform (Charge Forward x Semitone by Dubai Destination) is trained by Jason Coyle for her breeders the Esplin family and has now won five times with three placings in 25 starts for earnings of $481,685.

She had not won since she was a 3YO in 2015 when she won G3 James Carr at Randwick and the G3 Keith Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange amid a crop of fine 3YO fillies that included Winx, First Seal, Fenway and Heavens Above.

“Despite her form tailing off Jason (Coyle) reckons she was worth persisting with and always had faith in her,” said Hamish Esplin.

“Slightly Sweet will probably have another run in a fortnight (Listed Winter Challenge) and we’ll see how she goes from there.

“If she holds her form, we might tip her out and bring her back for some of the big mare races in the autumn.

“We don’t like to retire our horses too early. I think there’s far too much concentration on sending horses to stud before their time and, after all, having fun at the races is what it’s all about.

“We raced a mare called Plucky Belle who won a Group One (Coolmore Classic) as a 6YO and, fingers crossed, Slightly Sweet can do the same.”

Slightly Sweet, out of the unraced Dubai Destination mare Semitone, was retained by the Esplins after she was twice passed in as a yearling for low prices at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and again at the MM National Sale in 2013.

She is a daughter of the unraced Dubai Destination mare Semitone, a half-sister to Listed winner and G1 placed Stay Tuned (Marscay).

Semitone has had two foals to race in sisters Slightly Sweet and stakes-placed Positive Charge (Charge Forward).

Slightly Sweet’s third dam is the European G3 winner Wenona (Larkspur) and is from the same family as Sculptor (His Royal Highness), a New Zealand G2 and G3 winner.

Semitone has a 2YO fily by Equiano, a yearling filly by Mossman, a weanling filly by Charge Forward and was covered by Olympic Glory last spring.

Slightly Sweet is one of 16 stakes winners by the Red Ransom stallion Charge Forward, who originally stood at Arrowfield Stud for 12 seasons and relocates this year to Tim and Celie Nolan’s Murrulla Stud in the Hunter Valley.

Charge Forward was bred by Hamish Esplin’s father Phil Esplin, a former director of Arrowfield who passed away five years ago.

He is out of the Bletchingly mare Sydney’s Dream, and was sold as a yearling to Peter Horwitz. He won the Breeders’ Plate, Todman Stakes, San Domenico Stakes and the G1 Galaxy for Horwitz.

“When he retired to Arrowfield we purchased some shares in Charge Forward and have bred quite a few winners by him over the years,” Esplin said.

“When the opportunity came up to buy a majority shareholding in the stallion, we jumped at it and now he’s moved to Murrulla.

“What’s particularly exciting is that he’s turning out to be a top notch broodmare sire with his daughters producing this year’s Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign, Limestone and the Perth stakes winner Precious Memories.”

Winter Stakes 3U , 1400m
Race Synopsis: In a race where the first five horses finished within a halflength, outsiders filled the first three placings. The narrow winner being the Jason Coyle-trained mare Slightly Sweet who settled down in ninth place, wide with cover. She then went deeper on turning for home, took a slender lead at the 100m and battled best under limit weight (53kg) to score in a photo. Man Of His Word settled back in 11th place, tracked up nearing the home turn, commenced a wide run on straightening to challenge at the 100m. He then kept finishing well for a good second. Elle Lou was a handy fifth (between runners), got a split to take a narrow lead at the 50m and then fought on for a close up third. Shiraz raced in sixth place (between runners), got a split at the 200m, challenged shortly afterwards and battled on well for (0.4 lengths) fourth. Burning Passion began well but was caught three wide, without cover outside the leading pair (Ninth Legion and Oxford Poet). He briefly got to the front at the 200m and then held on very well for (0.5 lengths) fifth after a difficult trip at his first start for new trainer Mark Newnham. The favourite Gold Symphony raced back in tenth place, was blocked on straightening and then ran on in restricted room for (2.1 lengths) 11th. His run should be overlooked.
