Stratum, the product of an imported mare in-bred to the iconic champions Northern Dancer and Secretariat, died prematurely in September at the age of 14 just as the son of Redoute’s Choice was preparing to cover his 11th book of mares at Widden Stud.

Takedown joins the four-time G1 winner Streama, Stratum Star, Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and Southern Lord as the five major winners sired by Stratum in his 10 productive years at stud that resulted in almost 400 individual winners of 1150 races, including some 31 stakes winners, earning more than $48 million prizemoney.

Stratum was at the peak of his powers at the time of his death, having supplied 106 winners of 165 races and $7,804,935 in the 2015-16 racing season.

He was one of five Golden Slipper winners to stand at Widden Stud, a tradition established when the inaugural Slipper winner Todman joined the roster from the neighbouring Baramul Stud at the age of 16.

The other Golden Slipper winners to stand at Widden have been Vain, Marscay and current resident Sebring.

Todman sired two Slipper winners (Eskimo Prince; Sweet Embrace) while standing at Baramul Stud. At Widden he sired Blazing Saddles, the third placegetter in the 1977 Golden Slipper behind Luskin Star and Lloyd Boy.

Vain sired two Golden Slipper winners (Sir Dapper 1983; Inspired 1984) in his time at Widden; Marscay was responsible for the 1993 winner Bint Marscay, and Stratum sired the 2008 winner Crystal Lily.

Takedown (Stratum x Apamea by Zafonic), winner earlier this season of the G2 ATC Shorts and G2 Premiere Stakes, took his record to seven wins, three seconds and three thirds from 20 starts with his Winterbottom Stakes success for prize money of $1,455,000.

Bred by WIdden and raced by the stud with partners, Takedown had also won Canberra’s G3 Black Opal Stakes, the G3 Baillieu Stakes and Gold Coast Guineas but had disappointed at his only two previous starts at G1 level in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick as a 2YO and the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in June.

His dam Apamea, a European-bred mare, was stakes placed in France and won twice in Australia after she was purchased in the UK by Tasman Bloodstock for 160,000gns from the 2006 Tattersalls December Mare Sale.

A half-sister to the French Listed winner Angelina Carolina (Kris) as well as the stakes-placed Mateyev (Woodman), Apamea has produced two other winners from four foals to race including the Hong Kong winner Sea Diamond.

Apamea is from the Nureyev mare Angelina Ballerina, a Listed winner in England and second in the California Oaks.

Angelina Ballerina, a daughter of the Secretariat mare Solariat, is a sister to Alex Nureyev, the Italian Listed winner who served as a sire in Australia. He left the dual G1 winner Oliver Twist, a $1.3 million earner whose 14 wins included the Mackinnon Stakes and Underwood Stakes.

Apamea is inbred 4x3 to Northern Dancer and 4x3 to Secretariat. Her fourth dam Sex Appeal is a half-sister to the third dam of Stratum’s sire Redoute’s Choice.

Apamea has a three-year-old filly by Redoute’s Choice named Orontes in training with Newcastle-based Kris Lees.

After producing Orontes, Apamea slipped to Redoute’s Choice in 2013 and missed to Shamus Award in 2014.

She also missed to Zoustar last year but was tested in foal to Stratum in the same week the died.

Takedown is trained at Rosehill by Gary Moore, a former seven times champion Hong Kong jockey, Prix de ‘Arc de Triomphe winning rider and leading Macau trainer.

The son of former champion jockey George Moore always believed Takedown was top class and was thrilled to win his first G1 race in Australia.

Race Synopsis: The Gary Moore-trained sprinter Takedown maintained his consistent form with a career highlight in taking out this Group One race, his seventh win in 20 starts to date (which includes six placings). He began well, settled nicely outside the leader (Sheidel), challenged that mare strongly on straightening and lifted gamely to hit the front on passing the 50m to win well. Sheidel was quickly away and went straight to the front, going along a quite a good tempo (first 600m in 34.99). She was challenged at the home turn but was only headed at the 50m before fighting well for second after running a bold race. Rock Magic raced in ninth place, between runners, got a split on straightening the then finished well for a good third. First Among Equals settled near last in the 12-horse field, went widest of all at the home turn and impressed with his late-closing fourth, beaten a length. The second favourite Malaguerra had a good run in third place on the rails, got along the inner at the 100m and then battled on quite well for (1.1 lengths) fifth while the favourite Terravista had a good run in fifth place, looked a threat at the home turn but then weakened to finish (8.3 lengths) tenth, racing many lengths below his best, suggesting that something may have been amiss.
