Weir Classic Winners Come From Same Maiden

It’s doubtful trainer Darren Weir could have anticipated what was to come for two of his unheralded stablemates when they clashed in a country maiden event in January.

The Weir pair who filled the first and second places in that maiden race over 1400m at Terang on January 31 are now both Group One classic winners.

The winner Leicester Horseform won the SA Derby at Morphettville on Saturday, a week after Sopressa Horseform – the stablemate he beat into second place in that now famous maiden race – won the G1 Australasian Oaks at the same track.

Leicester, a gelding bred and sold as a yearling by Yarraman Park Stud, provided his sire Wanted with his first G1 winner and gave Darren Weir his third successive win in the $600,000 SA Derby.

Leicester (Wanted x Defy The Odds by Galileo) won the G3 Chairman’s Handicap at Morphettville at his previous start to become one of three stakes winners by his sire, a G1 winning son of Fastnet Rock.

Leicester has the overall record of four wins and two placings from nine starts and $535,730 prizemoney.

He has become a great bargain for his owners including bloodstock agent Paul Willetts who bought him for a bargain $10,000 from the Yarraman Park draft at the Australian Weanling Sale in 2015.

Leicester is the first foal of Defy The Odds, a placed half-sister to G3 winner Index Linked. Defy The Odds has since produced fillies by I Am Invincible.

His stakes-placed second dam Fully Invested (Irish River) produced five winners, including Index Linked (Dansili) and is a half-sister to G3 winners Memorise (Lyphard) and Multiplex (Danehill).

This family also includes G2 winner Await The Dawn (Giant’s Causeway), G3 winner Ollie Olga (Stormy Atlantic) and stakes winners Putney Bridge (Mizzen Mast) and Aqlaam Vision (Aqlaam).

Peaceful State

THE Darren Weir-trained Peaceful State was the first Australian stakes winner by his sire Animal Kingdom and added a second black type win when he landed the Listed Adelaide Guines at Morphettville on Saturday.

Peaceful State Horseform is a half-brother to seven time G1 winner Weekend Hussler from the Helissio mare Weekend Beauty and is raced by Japan’s Kenji Yoshida.

Animal Kingdom, a former Arrowfield Stud shuttler, won the G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Dubai World Cup and stands at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky.

Race Synopsis: Like Peaceful State and Tequila Time, winners of two of the earlier features on the card as well as here two weeks ago, Leicester proved that last start winning form holds up well and he was yet again too good for his staying rivals. Damian Lane found a nice spot in fifth, one off the fence out of the straight with a circuit to run, moving into fourth starting down the back. He held his position past the 1000m to the 600m then crept a little closer and had a great view, four out, turning for home. Lane asked the question at the 200m and the gelding ranged alongside at the 100m before edging away to win convincingly by a length and half, his fourth win in nine starts for earnings of $535,730. Rezealient was midfield at the 600m, ran wide turning in and kept up a strong run but was never going to catch the winner. Runaway did really well to hold third after setting the pace and fought back when headed at the 200m. Tropical Lightning was second into the straight and kept battling to the line for a good fourth.
