Winx Sets Records For NSW Breeding

Whatever her future may hold, champion mare Winx has already attained a special place in NSW breeding history with her 21st successive win in Saturday’s G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

No horse ever bred in NSW has won as many races in succession or earned as much money as Winx Horseform.

She is led for successive wins in Australia by only the Victorian-bred Black Caviar Horseform who was unbeaten in her 25 outings- 15 of them G1 races.

By earnings only the triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva Horseform, a mare bred in Great Britain who won $14.5 million, has won more prizemoney in Australia.

Winx, a $230,000 purchase for Magic Bloodstock at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, has now earned over $13.77 million with her Turnbull Stakes victory being her 14th in a G1 race.

Bred by the Camilleri family's Fairway Thoroughbreds operation, Winx (Street Cry x Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar) was raised on Coolmore Stud and sold through their draft at the Gold Coast.

Winx is from the stakes winning mare Vegas Showgirl - herself a $455,000 buy for Fairway Thoroughbreds through Colm Santry Bloodstock at the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Winx, Black Caviar and Makybe Diva have one thing in common in that their immediate families were all but devoid of G1 success.

Winx’s dam Vegas Showgirl was a good performer up to Listed level in New Zealand, but none of her first four dams did much on the racetrack and the only other G1 winner under her first five dams is El Khobar, a NZ-bred sprinter whose 10 wins included the G1 Doomben Ten Thousand.

El Khobar was a half-brother by Gabador to Winx’s fourth dam Vegas, a winner by the Stardust sire Stunning.

Winx’s late sire Street Cry, a son of Machiavellian, died in 2014.

He is responsible for almost 1000 winners of over 3000 races and $152 million. Among his 114 stakes winners are 19 G1 winners including eight in Australia.

Street Cry also sired a US counterpart to Winx in the champion Zenyatta, a daughter of a Kris S mare who won her first 19 starts including 13 in G1 races, before her only defeat in her last career start when beaten a head in the Breeders Cup Classic.

Race Synopsis: Winx looks primed to take out her third successive Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in three weeks after taking out her 21st successive win and her 13th Group One victory in brilliant fashion, yet again. She began well yesterday and was then ridden patiently well back in fifth place by Hugh Bowman. She moved up well (with cover) approaching the home turn, cruised to the lead at the 300m and then raced away to score effortlessly by six and a half lengths. Irish-bred import Ventura Storm raced back in third place, behind quite a good tempo before improving nearing the home turn. He went to second at the 300m and then fought on well for a distant second, putting up a promising performance at his fourth Australian start. Dual Group One winner Humidor raced back in second last place in the seven-horse field, got to fifth (racing ungenerously and hanging a bit) at the 300m and then battled on to take third, without looking dangerous at any stage.
