Shrewd Iain Jardine refuses to duck Mallard mission at Doncaster

Iain Jardine is chasing another notable prize on Friday when Shrewd runs in the William Hill Mallard Handicap at Doncaster.

In what has been a breakthrough season for the Carrutherstown handler, Jardine finally landed a big pot after a string of near-misses when Nakeeta won the Ebor at York.

At Haydock on Saturday, stablemate Sepal Horseform brought up a four-timer in the race formerly known as the Old Borough Cup and, on the same card, Mayleaf Shine won a valuable sprint handicap.

Shrewd Horseform, who is also a decent hurdler, has not been in the best of form this summer but, as a result, has been given a chance by the handicapper.

"He'll love the ground," said Jardine.

"Because the ground's been a bit fast this season for him he's dropped down the weights a bit, but that means he's now 4lb lower than when he nearly won the Ebor last year so he should go well."

Shrewd takes on seven rivals, including Byron Flyer (Ian Williams), Penglai Pavilion (Saeed bin Suroor) and Time To Study (Mark Johnston).
