GOLDEN ROSE 2018

Trapeze Artist wins the
Golden Rose at big odds

G1 1400m ROSEHILL
Saturday 22 September

The Golden Rose has quickly become one of the elite G1s of the Spring even though it is the first one conducted.

Many runners in the race have gone onto win other majors during their respective Springs but future elite horses have also emanated from the beaten entries.

In 2014 Hallowed Crown came from a long way back to charge over the field for Bart and James Cummings. He'd prove it was no fluke in the Autumn with other top efforts.

Then in consecutive years, Godolphin have won impressively with Exosphere and then Astern. He came from well back, rounded them up and ran on by.

In an upset at the time, Trapeze Artist was wide and kept rolling then exploded away in 2017. At the time it looked an outlier however he came back and TJ Smith/All Aged G1 double at the Championships.

2017 Race Details:
TRAPEZE ARTIST (Tye Angland/Gerald Ryan)
Barrier 14 - 56.5kg - $41
2nd Champagne Cuddles (J Collett)/3rd Menari (J Parr)

EPSOM HCP 2018

Popular Happy Clapper takes
his first G1 in the Epsom

G1 1600m RANDWICK
Saturday 29 September

The Epsom is generally a fast run handicap run from the best starting position in racing - the Randwick mile.

Over the last 25 years we've seen some high quality WFA stars like Racing To Win, Desert War, Shogun Lodge, Filante and Winx salute. The mighty Super Impose won this twice as part of his quartet of mile victories.

While mares haven't had a great record (2 wins since 1976), it's been the first lady of racing who has dominated this with seven winners of the race from 1997 onwards.

One of the most popular horses in training was Happy Clapper and he finally got his deserved G1 with a strong win under a good weight. He'd do the Epsom/Doncaster double six months later.

2017 Race Details:
HAPPY CLAPPER (Blake Shinn/Pat Webster)
Barrier 2 - 57.0kg - $2.38 fav
2nd Tom Melbourne (G Boss)/3rd Snitzson (C Parish)

THE METROPOLITAN 2018

Foundry wins The Metropolitan

G1 2400m RANDWICK
Saturday 29 September

The Metropolitan over the last few years has had a rebirth with the form standing up in future staying races.

Before Equine Influenza struck, back to back Metrop winners went onto win the Caulfield Cup in the shape of Tawqeet and Railings.

Then in 2012 Glencadam Gold came off a Newcastle Cup win to score easily. He was then disappointing as favourite in the Caulfield Cup before getting back on track with a top 6th in the big one at Flemington alongside second placed Kelinni who beat him home in the Cup.

Gai Waterhouse has an extraordinary record in the race but it was Godolphin in 2015 who produced a staying handicap winner which doesn't happen often.

The staying factory that is Macedon Lodge provided another feature winner with Foundry using a light weight to score.

2017 Race Details:
FOUNDRY (Michael Dee/Robert Hickmott)
Barrier 8 - 50.5kg - $10
2nd Big Duke (B Avdulla)/3rd Chocante (C Brown)

SPRING CHAMPION STAKES 2018

Ace High just salutes in
the Spring Champion Stakes

G1 2000m RANDWICK
Saturday 6 October

Often the forerunner to future staying potential, the Spring Champion became the G1 for the Sydney 3yos after the AJC Derby was moved to the Autumn.

It was a real stallion makers race a while back but still does provide AJC Derby form six months out as we've seen several times.

It was moved a week later to become more of a Victoria Derby lead up as few horses have run in both this and the Caulfield Guineas in recent years.

Ace High showed what a top young stayer he was to become by scrambling home when favourite at Randwick. He'd go on to win at Flemington and then miss the Derby double in the Autumn by a nose.

2017 Race Details:
ACE HIGH (Tye Angland/David Payne)
Barrier 4 - 56.5kg - $3 fav
2nd Tangled (B Shinn)/3rd Sully (B Avdulla)

CAULFIELD GUINEAS 2018

Mighty Boss wins the
Caulfield Guineas in an upset

G1 1600m CAULFIELD
Saturday 13 October

A classic test for the 3yos, it often provides great theatre and/or great controversy.

A lot of the form in recent seasons has come from the Golden Rose as it strangely has been a northern state's race in contrast to most other Victorian G1s.

Who will forget the extraordinary win of God's Own after being knocked over three times or the Redoute's Choice/Testa Rossa war from the home turn.

We saw another great battle when All Too Hard ran down Pierro and a similar situation occurred when Shooting To Win nabbed Rich Enuff late.

Among a spate of big priced winners over the 2017 Spring, Mighty Boss railed home to hold off the favourites who were a tad unlucky.

2017 Race Details:
MIGHTY BOSS (Michael Walker/Mick Price)
Barrier 5 - 56.5kg - $101

THOUSAND GUINEAS 2018

Aloisia surges away with
the Thousand Guineas

G1 1600m CAULFIELD
Saturday 13 October

The fillies are provided with their chance for a mile G1 but it's also an important Oaks lead up.

And what a record it has been in recent years with the likes of Miss Finland, Special Harmony, Magical Miss, Northwood Plume, Arborea, Richfield Lady and Tristanagh all taking the double in the last 25 years.

We saw half-sisters Atlantic Jewel and Commanding Jewel win in consecutive years and Fastnet Rock won another edition when Amicus sat on the speed in the first running of the race to be held on Caulfield Guineas day.

A highly impressive effort last year came from Aloisia when she surged up the inside to run down many future big race winners.

CAULFIELD CUP 2018

Boom Time takes the Caulfield Cup

G1 2400m CAULFIELD
Saturday 20 October

Victoria in the Spring is all about the staying handicaps and the Caulfield Cup is the first of the big two.

In some ways for a while it was showing up more of the quality stayers in the country than the Melbourne Cup. Within 25 years we've seen the likes of Elvstroem, Mummify, Ethereal, Sky Heights, Doriemus and two legends in Northerly and Might and Power score sensational wins.

There have been three international winners in the last ten years after Godolphin's first major in Australia in 2008 as the royal blue surged home with local boy Kerrin McEvoy aboard.

Then the mighty French stayer Dunaden did what Viewed had done three years before in coming back from a Melbourne Cup to take the Caulfield Cup with a withering burst. Japan got on the board with a dramatic surge from Admire Rakti before his sad demise at Flemington.

2017 saw a huge upset when Boom Time took inside splits to surge away for Lindsay Park under his unheralded jockey Cory Parish.

2017 Race Details:
BOOM TIME (Cory Parish/David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig)
Barrier 3 - 52.0kg - $51

MANIKATO STAKES 2018

Hey Doc holds on in the Manikato Stakes

G1 1200m MOONEE VALLEY
Friday 26 October

Only moved to Cox Plate eve in 2012, the Manikato gained a big prize money boost and a top field assembled.

It's been previously won by some of the best horses around with Dual Choice, Manikato (himself), Strawberry Road, Rubiton, Dane Ripper, Redoute's Choice, Sunline, Miss Andretti, Hay List and Sepoy all taking the prize.

When Buffering won his first G1, there were amazing scenes but it will be hard to top the theatre, both during and after the race, of 2014 when Lankan Rupee led home a swarm of rivals and then survived a long protest hearing to take the win.

Chautauqua was a late scratching at the gates and there was more controversy with another protest but Hey Doc scored another upset during the Spring by going to the front and holding them off.

2017 Race Details:
HEY DOC (Luke Currie/Tony McEvoy)
Barrier 8 - 58.5kg - $21
2nd In Her Time (C Brown)/3rd Malaguerra (D Oliver)

COX PLATE 2018

Winx makes history in the Cox Plate

G1 2040m MOONEE VALLEY
Saturday 27 October

Australasia's WFA Championship is no idol boast. It's just over two minutes of great drama with the rough and tumble of the equines around the tight Moonee Valley course.

Many of the absolute champions of the turf have won this race with Phar Lap, Tulloch and Kingston Town amongst them. Besides the King's trifecta there's also been Super Impose's mayhem Plate, the earth rumbling for Might and Power, Sunline and Northerly's dual wins and Makybe Diva's affirmation. Then there was Bonecrusher vs Our Waverley Star racing into equine immortality.

We thought we'd seen it all until Bart produced a fifth starter to score in the second fastest Plate in history with So You Think utterly dominant then he backed it up twelve months on.

International acclaim was to occur in 2014 as Ryan Moore circled the field on Adelaide for Ballydoyle taking their first feature in Australia.

However the modern day legend of the turf Winx equalled the 'King' when she got her three-peat of Cox Plates. Hugh Bowman took no risks but when Humidor ranged up it looked in doubt. Her staying ability kicked in as the Valley rocked.

2017 Race Details:
WINX (Hugh Bowman/Chris Waller)
Barrier 5 - 57.0kg - $1.18 fav
2nd Humidor (B Shinn)/3rd Folkswood (K McEvoy)

VICTORIA DERBY 2018

Ace High was so strong in
the Victoria Derby

G1 2500m FLEMINGTON
Saturday 3 November

Victoria Derbies are for the 3yos to determine who is the best stayer at the time although there have been calls for a reduction in distance back to 2000m.

Whatever it is over, the Derby is the main spectacle on the first day of the VRC Cup Carnival. Efficient won the Derby in 2006 and came back a year later to add the Cup to the Lloyd Williams mantelpiece.

New Zealand took three in a row with Monaco Consul, Lion Tamer and Sangster all winning the Blue Riband.

The race has been won by maidens in the past and another scored in 2014 as Preferment surged late as he had done in the Geelong Classic but this time he won by a head.

Following his nose win in the Spring Champion, Ace High was able to sit three wide at Flemington and surged over the rivals despite having no love from the punters. It continued David Payne's horses running big races in the Derby.

2017 Race Details:
ACE HIGH (Tye Angland/David Payne)
Barrier 3 - 55.5kg - $7 fav
2nd Sully (H Bowman)/3rd Astoria (D Lane)

MELBOURNE CUP 2018

Rekindling takes the Melbourne Cup

G1 3200m FLEMINGTON
Tuesday 6 November

The Melbourne Cup - you don't need to say much more. Its history is its shining light.

And the one who shines brightest won it for the 12th time in 2008 as Bart conjured Viewed to win the Cup by a nose from Bauer giving Luca Cumani back to back second placings. It may be a handicap but it's the race every Australian owner wants to win just to say you are part of that history.

Doubtful we'll see another Champion become a Legend in our lifetimes like Makybe Diva but we love the Cup anyway.

After back to back French winners, it was a former English trained horse, then at Mt Macedon, who won in a decisive manner in 2012. Green Moon was already a Turnbull winner but after disappointment as Cox Plate favourite, he loved the firm ground and the light weight at Flemington.

Fiorente made it another ex-Euro giving Gai Waterhouse her biggest success before a locally owned but overseas trained horse in Protectionist provided Germany with its first victory in the race that stops a nation and gave Ryan Moore the big double. He beat the gallant Red Cadeaux who was second again.

2015 saw more history made as a woman jockey won for the first time bringing a 100-1 shot up the centre. Prince Of Penzance took on a tough field of stayers but it was run very slowly. There were amazing scenes.

Lloyd Williams won another Cup last year (and two in a row plus the quinella) as Rekindling gave Joseph O'Brien the win his father had sought several times. It was an all Irish trained trifecta.

2017 Race Details:
REKINDLING (Corey Brown/Joseph O'Brien)
Barrier 4 - 51.5kg - $15
2nd Johannes Vermeer (B Melham)/3rd Max Dynamite (Z Purton)

VRC OAKS 2018

Pinot strides clear to win the VRC Oaks

G1 2500m FLEMINGTON
Thursday 8 November

While the Derby has seen upsets, the Oaks is usually the domain for favoured fillies. Not so in 2016.

So many have been at or around even money and have gotten the chocolates. Not many in recent times have been as impressive as Samantha Miss who played with them after taking the Princess Series in Sydney.

Mosheen was a recent winner who would go onto good success following her big win at Flemington and in 2014 we saw Set Square win the race at her fourth start.

Ciaron Maher would make it consecutive wins in the Oaks as Jameka followed a Vase victory with a strong win at headquarters.

Gai Waterhouse had chased big race success at Flemington and in 2017 completed the big-race set (with Adrian Bott now) with a win in the Oaks as Pinot was too tough after the short favourite Aloisia had plenty of issues before and after they jumped.

2017 Race Details:
PINOT (Stephen Baster/Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott)
Barrier 6 - 55.5kg - $5.50
2nd Bring Me Roses (L Currie)/3rd Hiyaam (M Dee)

DARLEY CLASSIC 2018

Redzel flies down the outside fence
in the Darley Classic

G1 1200m FLEMINGTON
Saturday 10 November

The best WFA sprint of the Melbourne Spring is held on the last day of the carnival.

While officialdom was not pleased, all the connections of the best sprinters around were happy to see Black Caviar not back to make it a trifecta of wins in the race in 2012.

Buffering confirmed his first G1 was no fluke by winning the straight sprint in 2013 and then in 2014 we saw the replay of the Manikato but had added spice with international interest from Slade Power.

While his sojourn south didn't work out as hoped, four great sprinters went toe to toe with Terravista taking a late split to win the big prize.

Last year was an amazing aftermath to the hype of The Everest. Redzel won the huge prize at Randwick and backed it up down the straight coming down the outside fence, beating a host of G1 winners.

2017 Race Details:
