Iffraaj Star WIns His Fourth Group One

Godolphin's star 4YO Ribchester secured his fourth G1 win in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (1600m) at Chantilly on Sunday.

The Richard Fahey-trained son of Iffraaj travelled strongly under James Doyle to beat Taareef (Kitten’s Joy) by three quarters of a length, with Massaat (Teofilo) a further three and a half lengths behind in third place.

Ribchester Horseform will now head to Ascot on October 21 for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Fahey was understandably delighted with Ribchester’s victory following his surprising defeat in the G1 Sussex Stakes last month.

"He gets a bit wayward but that was a good performance today," Fahey said after the 4YO survived a a stewards inquiry.

"The QEII is now the definite target, and if he was mine I would definitely think about running him in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

“We’ll discuss that with his entourage."

Last time in France Ribchester beat the subsequent G1 Prix du Moulin winner Vadamos in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville and subsequently earned leading miler status in Europe as a result of wins in the G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ribchester is the first foal out of the Marju mare Mujarah, a half to G3 Curragh Cup winner Tactic (Sadler’s Wells) and Zahoo ((Nayef) who is the dam of the G3 winner Convergence (Cape Cross).

His third dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Mehthaaf, dam of the G2 winner Najah (Nashwan) and descending from the G2 winner Elle Seule (Exclusive Native) a daughter of the renowned Fall Aspen.

THE Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Bateel (Dubawi x Attractive Crown by Chief’s Crown) stayed on strongly to land the G1 Prix Vermeille (2400m) at Chantilly on Sunday providing her sire Dubawi with his 31st G1 winner.

The improving mare, who won the G2 Prix de Pomone at her previous start, beat two other Dubawi products Journey and Left Hand to give the Darley sire a G1 trifecta. Dubawi stood for a fee of £250,000 this year and has sired 136 stakes winners overall.

For her trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, the Prix Vermeille holds a special place in his family history as the 1955 winner Wild Miss was owned by his grandfather.

“It has always been in my mind that I would like to win it myself, so I am very happy,” he said.

“This filly was sent to me in order to try and win a Group 1 race on soft ground in France and she has gone from strength to strength.

“When the entries for the Arc were made she was not even a Group 3 winner so I have no regrets about not putting her in.

“It is only three weeks away but we will not be afraid to supplement her if we think it is right for her.

She Ascot’s British Champions Fillies & Mares as an option where she may clash with Journey, winner of that race last year.

Bateel Horseform is a half-sister to the Listed winner Basemah from the G2 placed Attractive Crown (Chief’s Crown), a granddaughter of the Silver Shark mare Arosa.

Owned by Al Asayl Bloodstock and bred by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nayhan, Bateel has won seven of her 12 starts.

The Dermot Weld-trained Shamreen (Dubawi x Shareen by Bahri) led from gate to wire to win back to back runnings of the G2 Blandford Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

The Aga Khan-bred and raced filly, who made all to win the G2 last season, picked up well once challenged inside the final furlong and went clear to beat Beautiful Morning (Galileo) and Rain Goddess (Galileo).

The Jim Bolger-trained Verbal Dexterity (Vocalised x Lonrach by Holy Roman Emperor) stayed on strongly to win the G1 National Stakes at the Curragh to provide his sire with his first G1 winner and third stakes winner.

Vocalised stands at Bolger’s Redmondstown Stud in Ireland.
