Iffraaj Star Wins Lockinge Stakes

Godolphin star Ribchester, the outstanding son of shuttle sire Iffraaj, added another Group One win to his record on Saturday when he turned the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury into a procession.

William Buick’s positive tactics on Ribchester (Iffraaj x Mujarah by Marju) gave the Godolphin team an eighth win in Newbury’s feature race.

Not seen since finishing third in the G1 Dubai Turf over nine furlongs at Meydan March 25, Ribchester won by almost four lengths to add the Lockinge to the four-year-old’s win in last year’s G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

With stablemate and potential pacemaker Toscanini missing the break it was left to Buick to set the pace and Ribchester proved more than content in the role.

With three furlongs to run it was clear that Ribchester had his rivals in trouble although his errant path soon after gave Lightning Spear a half chance at close the gap. However as soon as Ribchester had the rail to guide him he surged away to the relief of trainer Richard Fahey.

“I was quite nervous today, as it was a big day and he performed,” Fahey said.

“He’s mature physically and is getting better. I’m happy with where he is and he’s happy in his mind.

“The Queen Anne at Royal Ascot looks every inch where we’ll go, but it was a fair slog today so we also need to check he’s okay.”

Ribchester, one of eight G1 winners by Iffraaj (Zafonic), is the first foal out of the Marju mare Mujarah, a half sister to the G3 Curragh Cup winner Tactic (Sadler’s Wells) and the G3 placed Yaazy (Teofilo).

His third dam Mehthaaf (Nureyev) won the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G2 Celebration Mile and G3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and was a half sister to the G1 July Cup winner and sire Elnadim.

Further back his fourth dam Elle Seule (Exclusive Native) won the G1 Prix d’Astarte and is related to a the family of the great broodmare Fall Aspen that includes Timber Country, Bianconi, Fort Wood, Hamas and Dubai Millennium.

It also features the dual G1 winner Occupandiste (Kaldoun), who produced last year’s GI Arlington Million winner Mondialiste (Galileo).

Mujarah has a yearling colt by Raven’s Pass and a colt foal by Dubawi.
