Ulysses Strikes For Galileo In Eclipse Stakes

Galileo’s newest Group One winner Ulysses has added to a stellar racing year for the Niarchos family by winning the G1 Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

The Niarchos homebred added to other products of their breeding program that include Ulysses’s relative Cloth of Stars (Sea the Stars) winning the G1 Prix Ganay, G2 Prix d’Harcourt and G3 Prix Exbury and another homebred Senga (Blame) capturing the G1 Prix de Diane.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the four-year-old Ulysses (Galileo x Light Shift by Kingmambo) beat the 3YO Barney Roy (Excelebration) to give Stoute his sixth win in the Eclipse Stakes.

Coming off a third in the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, Ulysses bobbed on the line to beat his younger rival by a nose as they pulled 3 1/2 lengths clear of third placed Desert Encounter (Halling).

Ulysses was bred to win the Eclipse as dam’s half-sister Shiva (Hector Protector) was beaten by Giant’s Causeway and Kalanisi in the race in 2000.

His dam Light Shift won the 2007 Epsom Oaks while her half-brothers include the G2 winner and sire Limnos and G1 placed Hyades.

Another half-sister Burning Sunset (Caerleon) produced the G2 Prix d’Harcourt scorer and G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup runner-up Smoking Sun (Smart Strike) and G3 placed Ikat (Pivotal).

She in turn produced multiple G1 winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran) while another half-sibling of Light Shift Strawberry Fledge (Kingmambo) is the dam of Cloth of Stars.

Ulysses is the last foal out of Light Shift, a daughter of the Shirley Heights mare Lingerie and granddaughter of Northern Trick (Northern Dancer).

Ulysses was recording his fourth win in 10 starts that include the G3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Goodwood.
