Craven Stakes day at Newmarket
So far so good for John Gosden who picked up yesterday's Nell Gwyn for the 5th time with his filly Daban.
Despite starting at 12/1 she ran as if she belonged and held out Unforgettable Filly at 14/1 and Poet's Vanity 6/1. Pamplemousse wasn't too bad in fourth and Sea of Grace took fifth. The O'Brien runners looked like they needed the run.
Earlier Richard Hannon's Steel Of Madrid won the Earl of Sefton by 1/2l from favourite Folkswood with Spark Plug third, Abdon fourth.
Thursday's G3s start with the Abernant Stakes over 1200m and there are 7 runners. Brando looks the best here and is on 11/10 with Ornate and Tasleet on 6/1.
The Craven Stakes in theory is a clash between War Decree who had a very good 2016 with Ryan Moore continuing his association with the horse, and Racing Post Trophy winner Rivet for William Haggas with Frankie Dettori booked. This is War Decree's first outing for 2017 and judging by the runs of some of his stablemates yesterday we wouldn't be putting the mortgage on him at 2/1. Rivet at 11/4 better value and again only 7 in the race.
