Brazilian Rider Wins World All Stars In Japan

Brazilian Eurico da Silva came from off the radar to capture Japan’s World All-Star Jockeys event at Sapporo at his first attempt.

Da Silva, who rode in Hong Kong on a short-term contract in 2016, went into the final two races on Sunday 22 points off the lead.

But, with 30 points awarded for a win, the Canada-based rider jumped the field when his mount Le Grand Frisson skirted wide on the home turn, kicked for home and held on to wiun the last of the four international races by a nose.

Da Silva’s haul of 47 points placed him ahead of Japan’s Yuichi Fukunaga (45 points) and Keita Tosaki (45 points) in equal second.

Joao Moreira finished fourth on 44 points but was the star of the day winning four races on the 12-race card.

Moreira, who won the All-Star cointest in 2015, languished in relative anonymity through Saturday’s first two races.

He had only eight points on the sheet at the overnight stage after running seventh and ninth in Saturday’s two events.

By the time the first of Sunday’s World All-Star races came around he won three races and made it four when it mattered with a triumph aboard Meisho Bach in the first of the international races.

Moreira missed out on a second World All-Star Jockeys title when his mount in the concluding fourth leg finished seventh.

In the team contest, Team JRA took the plaudits with an overall tally of 238 points to Team World All-Star’s 210 points.
