Daily Preview: Best Bet Wagga – Nov 28

The Set Weights conditions of the Class 2 Plate at Wagga on Monday sees Matthew Dale’s Falco pitchforked into the event first up.

Falco resumes after a four start autumn campaign which came after being transferred from the Joe Pride stable to the Matthew Dale yard.

The son of High Chaparral produced a third up win that campaign at provincial level, winning a Class 2 at Kembla Grange over 1400m.

He then struggled when thrown in the deep end at Rosehill before closing into fourth contesting a Highway Handicap over this distance, also at Rosehill.

After running at provincial and metropolitan venues, Falco Horseform now drops back to country company contesting Monday’s Riverina Signmakers Class 2 Plate (1300m).

Dale scratched Falco from a Benchmark 70 Handicap at Kembla Grange on Sunday to instead head in this direction.

It appears the stable have pulled the right reign with Falco pitchforked into this race under Set Weights conditions.

Falco has a handicap rating of 67, 11 points higher than the next best rated runner in the field, the Kym Davison-trained Dothraki Queen.

Such a deficit in Benchmark would represent a 7.5kg difference between the pair if they contested a handicap event against each other.

Instead, Dothraki Queen Horseform only gets a 2kg mares allowance off the early favourite.

The advantage Falco boasts over his rivals under these set weights conditions only grows.

He is proven first up and has performed well over this distance in the past.

A son of High Chaparral, Falco will likely be campaigned over further deeper into his campaign.

First up over 1300m appears a suitable starting point for the lightly-raced five-year-old however.

The only obvious concern is his racing style.

The gelding tends to settle back in his races and if that occurs on Monday he could find himself caught up in a lot of traffic as a host of runners in this field could be struggling to keep up.

Jockey Brodie Loy will ideally have him no worse than midfield.

Dothraki Queen shapes as the main danger despite having not shown a great deal so far this campaign.

The mare has been well beaten in each of her runs this campaign, the latest when one of the first runners beaten in a Highway Handicap over this distance at Rosehill.

This represents a sharp drop in grade and the mare will at least be fitter again third run from a spell.

She has won third up in the past and could be sparked with the application of Blinkers for the first time.

Our Project Horseform has mixed his form so far this campaign although is another in this field who has been lining up against stronger opposition.

His second up effort when a long neck third at Benalla was strong and he was fair last start at Gundagai in a strong Benchmark 60 at this distance.

The Phillip Sweeney-trained gelding should be at his peak fourth up and the 1.5kg claim of Brock Ryan is used to good effect.

Superoo Horseform shapes as the last of those who can at least keep things sporting for Falco.

The Gary Colvin-trained runner resumes after a four start campaign late last season where he commenced working through the grades.

Both wins came at this course, one of them on resuming.

1300m first up is something of a query for the son of Zizou who has generally been kept to distances between 1000m and 1200m.

In his favour however is an inside barrier and a 2kg claim of Chelsea Macfarlane which is used to good effect.

The battle for the minor placings can be a hotly contested affair between Dothraki Queen, Our Project and Superoo.

It is the Matthew Dale-trained Falco however who shapes as the class horse in the field and is expected to fire first up in the Riverina Signmakers Class 2 Plate (1300m) at Wagga.
