Infantry One To Beat In Singapore Gold Cup

Infantry looks well placed when he lines up in the Group 1 Dester Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) at Kranji today.

The five-year-old gelding returned in terrific order with a win in the Group 1 Panasonic Kranji Mile (1600m) early last month and has since been given a freshen up off that effort after sustaining a gash to the fetlock.

The only runner in the race who was first up, Infantry settled in a terrific spot off the pace, running on strongly in the straight to claim the lead inside 300m, running out a half length winner over Countofmontecristo in second with Debt Collector almost three lengths away in third.

Having now won nine of his 21 career starts, Infantry ran to a clear new career peak figure in the Kranji Mile, well above his Singapore Derby win prior to a spell.

The five-year-old Tavistock gelding measures up very well to recent winners of the race and returned a rating that is the equal highest of the Kranji Mile since it became a Group 1 in 2006.

Infantry Horseform was also the first horse to claim the Singapore Derby-Kranji Mile double since Top Spin in 2008 and despite not having won past 2000m to date the 2200m should not pose too many troubles today.

Infantry has won races from 1200m-2000m and is stamping himself as one of the leading horses in Singapore as shown by his strong rating last start.

Certainly has a couple things against today being the injury sustained last start and the long break between runs and wide draw but he is the class of the race and is certainly good enough to be winning today.

Gilt Complex Horseform was a surprise winner in the Group 1 Raffles Cup last start but it’s hard not to include him off the back of that effort.

One of the outsiders of the race, Gilt Complex came into the feature race off two modest runs in the Group 3 Committee’s Prize and Group 1 Kranji Mile.

Settling up on the speed for much of the race in second, the Cliff Brown-trained runner took over proceedings at the 200m and never looked like getting run down over the concluding stages.

Gilt Complex , who had not won since claiming a Kranji Stakes C back in March claimed a one and three quarter length win over Elite Excalibur in second with Lim’s Cruiser third and Countofmontecristo fourth.

The six-year-old gelding ran to a clear new career peak rating of 110, some three pounds below that of 2016 winner Debt Collector.

With a previous win over the 2200m trip, Gilt Complex will push forward and put himself in the race again from the good draw and expect him to take plenty of getting past.

Coming out of the same race, Elite Excalibur Horseform made good ground late to finish second on that occasion and certainly must be respected on that effort.

Despite not having won past the 1400m trip, Elite Excalibur has shown good ability over the longer trips, most notably at fifth placing over 2000m in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas as a three-year-old.

Form for the most part this campaign has been solid in some handy races without being brilliant but expect him to be running on into the finish again.

Good luck!
