In the last week Croix De Vie took out the inaugural $50,000 “Federal” in Canberra and Almost Court was also dominant winning the Narooma Cup at Moruya.

Co-trainer Paul Jones says the stable were “delighted” when Croix De Vie stormed home to win the Federal by 4.3L off a five month spell.

“I knew he was half a chance but didn’t expect him to win the way he did,” Jones said.

“The track has been playing a bit leader-biased which counted against our horse.

“I told Paddy (apprentice rider Paddy Scorse) not to get too far from the lead, even if it meant sitting three or four wide. And if he shows up he will be swooping home.”

“He’s run some solid races in Highways and we’ve figured that he races best on the fresh side around 1300m-1400m.”

Almost Court was also impressive walloping his Narooma Cup rivals by 2.3L on resumption, leading all the way as a firm favourite with Scorse up.

Almost Court has won four of his five starts since coming from New Zealand and is proving a versatile galloper.

“He’s a 2000m horse with speed and that’s always a potent combination,” Jones said.

“He’s being targeted at the Canberra Cup in March and will race next in the Bega Cup, and if all goes well will have a run in Sydney prior to Canberra.

“He’s a lovely clean-winded galloper with upside.”
