Victorem Horseform was a race morning scratching from the Port Macquarie meeting on February 2 where he was set to have his lead-up to the Country Championship heat.

Despite the setback Graham expects to have Victorem ready to join stablemates Awesome Pluck Horseform and Portatorio Horseform in the $150,000 Mid North Coast Racing Association Championship Heat.

Awesome Pluck, beaten at his two previous Sydney starts, bounced back to wining form at last Friday’s meeting when he responded to a change in riding tactics.

Ridden by Robert Thompson, Awesome Pluck came with a well-timed run from the rear in contrast to his recent Sydney defats when he raced too keenly on the pace.

Ferrniehirst, another Port Macquarie winner on Friday trained by Paul Smith, will also attempt to qualify for the $500,000 Country Championship Final through the Grafton heat for Northern Rivers trained horses on March 11.

Ferniehirst was taken to the front by Coffs Harbour jockey Ray Spokes and dashed away to win by five lengths.

A Port Macquarie barrier trial after the last race on Friday also featured Graham’s other Country Championship candidate Portatorio and the Marc Quinn-trained contender Cogliere.

Last year’s Country Championship heat winner Cogliere recorded a soft win by a length in the trial over Portatorio.

Marc Quinn said Cogliere Horseform will race first-up in the Port qualifier.

Horses can only run in the qualifying heats with no more than five career wins and 20 starts or less under their belt. Cogliere has raced 19 times for four wins and two placings.

The winner and runner-up in the qualifiers gain berths in the Country Championships Final (1400m) at Randwick on April 7.
