Veteran Tamworth trainer Merv Corliss has died at the age of 93.

Corliss was renowned as a leading trainer in north-west NSW for 50 years.

His best horses included the crowd favourite Akwazoff Horseform, who captured an incredible 16 country cups during the 1990s.


Akwazoff won the 1997 Grafton Cup and was placed third in that race in two other years. He retired with 36 wins to his credit and half a million dollars in prizemoney.

His other notable winners included Steelswitch (won 34 races including two at Rosehill), Victory Charm (12 wins), Akwitana, Dollar and Durie Blue

Corliss trained his last winner in 2010 when Glenbarra Boy won the Warialda Cup.

Corliss is survived by daughters Marion and Lesley and an extended family of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Corliss’ daughter Lesley Jeffriess, herself a successful trainer at Tamworth, said her father died peacefully on Sunday.

A funeral service for Merv Corliss will be held at Tamworth Racecourse commencing at 11am on February 19.
