Kia Tancred Stakes 3U , 2400m
Race Synopsis: The 2016 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin proved the superior stayer here. Having his third run this preparation, he began well and after working in the early stages, settled in third place. He moved up strongly (deep) nearing the home turn, challenged at the 300m, got to the front at the 100m and then drew clear to score impressively. Japanese-bred stayer Ambitious raced in fifth place on the rails, improved along the inner nearing the home turn, went to third at the 200m and then kept battling strongly for a second in a very good effort at his second run this preparation. Who Shot Thebarman raced back in second last place in the nine-horse field, went deep from the 300m and kept running on really well for third in a performance to suggest that this nine-year-old is far from a spent force. The favourite Gailo Chop went to the front, was overtaken in the midstages (by Lasqueti Spirit), regained the lead on turning for home, was only headed at the 100m and then fought on well for (1.6 lengths) fourth. Single Gaze raced in sixth place, put in a good run on turning for home and kept making ground, without threatening, for a very good fifth, beaten only two lengths in another very honest performance.
