2018 MOONEE VALLEY VASE – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Savoie and Cloak map on speed but there are some unknowns here with most stepping up in trip.

ARAMAYO impressed winning the Spring Stakes at Newcastle and went on with that when only narrowly edged out in the Spring Champion last time. Just peaked on his effort 50m from home there. Better for having had the run at the trip and expecting him to be in the finish here.

DEALMAKER has form that ties in with Aramayo from earlier in the prep. Always back in the Spring Champion but was off a setback there. Can come right on for that and think he has the talent to win races like this one.

VERRY ELLEEGANT stayed well last week and backs up. Must respect. Mickey Blue Eyes is going well.

Race Synopsis: A surprise win here by the Robbie Laing-trained colt Stars Of Carrum, his first win in eight starts, saw him suddenly come into calculations for the upcoming Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). He settled back on ninth place (on the rails), tracking a solid tempo, saved ground closer to the inner at the home turn, went to second on straightening and ran on resolutely to score a last stride win, appreciating the step up in distance here. Savoie raced in second place, tracking the leader (Cloak) who was setting a good pace. He went to the front approaching the home turn, looked the winner when he got a break on straightening, only to be caught on the post for the closest of seconds. Godolphin's Aramayo raced in tenth place, tracked up (wide with cover) from the 700m, went very wide rounding the home turn and kept running on well in the centre of the track to take third. Savvy Oak raced near the tail of the 13-horse field, improved (between runners) at the home turn and battled on nicely for (3.3 lengths) fourth while Mickey Blue Eyes made late ground, without threatening, to finish (4.6 lengths) fifth.
