Thursday’s 800m trial will be the first appearance by Chautauqua since he finished fourth in the G1 Darley Classic (1200m) won by Redzel at Flemington on November 11 when ridden by Dwayne Dunn.

Avdulla had ridden Chautauqua Horseform in his previous spring starts in Sydney, getting the call up from the Hawkes stable after the grey’s regular Sydney rider Tommy Berry moved to Hong Kong last winter.

Dunn has been Chautauqua's permanent rider in Victoria. He has ridden the sprinter 16 times but only once in a race outside Melbourne when the grey was unplaced at Scone as a three-year-old in 2014.

Avdulla rode Chautauqua in two trials and three races early in the season without success. His best race finish on the six-time G1 winner was a fourth in the $10 million Everest (1200m) at Randwick in October when the 7YO charged late after conceding his usual big start to the leaders.

Avdulla was criticised for taking an inside path over the last 400m in the Everest but the jockey defended his tactics on Twitter, outlining that the rail was out 6 metres and horses were not making headway wide on a very firm surface that did not suit Chautauqua.

“The rail position made it difficult to swoop wide and the track was too hard...Chautauqua hasn’t won on a firm surface in Australia since 20/02/2016” Avdulla tweeted.

Thursday’s trial will help to confirm race plans for Chautauqua ahead of his bid for a third successive win in the $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 7.

Options on the table for Chautauqua include the G2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on March 10, the G1 Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on March 24 or a trip to Melbourne for the G1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 23.

Rivals for Chautauqua in Thursday’s trial include Chris Waller’s G1 winners Foxplay Horseform and Egg Tart Horseform.

Another Warwick Farm trial that will command high interest on Thursday is a 2YO heat that features the unbeaten fillies Estijaab Horseform and Gongs Horseform, a pair high in latest betting for the Golden Slipper Stakes.
