Former champion jockey Bill Pyers has died after an illness at the age of 71.

Pyers rose from the South Australian riding ranks to become one of Australia's best known international jockeys

He started his apprenticeship in Adelaide and rode his first winner at Cheltenham in 1950.

He won six Adelaidie riding premierships and became one of Australia's most successful big race jockeys before embarking on a career in Europe.

Based in France, his maior wins in Europe and America included the Arc de Triomphe, English 2000 Guineas, King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes twice, Irish Oaks, French Derby, French Oaks and the Washington International.

Her also rode winners in Germany, Italy and Sweden.

Pyers won a host of big race in Australia including the Caulfield Cup, Golden Slipper Stakes , Doncaster Handicap, Newmarket Handicap, Futurity Sakes, VRC Sires Produce, Adelaide Cup , SA Derby and two Goodwood Handicaps.

Among the top horses he rode to success in theses races were Sometime, Pago Pago, Wenona Girl, Fine And Dandy and Gatum Gatum.
