Death of Derby-winning trainer Smyth

Derby-winning trainer Gordon Smyth has died at the age of 77.

Derby-winning trainer Gordon Smyth has died at the age of 77.

Smyth, who was based at Lewes in Sussex, saddled the Scobie Breasley-ridden Charlottown to win the blue riband in 1966.

In recent years he acted as racing manager to horses in training at Newmarket with Pip Payne.

"He died in hospital last night, near his home in Sussex. He had had a blood disorder for some time," Payne said.

"He managed a lot of horses I trained and he was a great man.

"He took over from his father (Willie) training for the Duke Of Norfolk at Arundel and John Dunlop was his assistant. And then he moved on to take over Towser Gosden's yard down at Lewes, where he trained Charlottown to win the Derby.

"After Lewes he went to Hong Kong, where he trained for 11 years, and then he came back to Sussex for his retirement.

"He managed several horses for Hong Kong clients that I trained and he was a very successful bloodstock agent.

"His wife, Sue, survives him."

"I took over Castle Stables in autumn 1965 from Gordon, who in turn had taken over from his father Willie Smyth. They were all members of the great training family from Epsom," Dunlop added.

"He was a great golfer, he loved playing the game and he had a wonderful time in Hong Kong in the latter part of his career, where he was very successful.

"Sadly, he had been very ill for the last two or three years."

Newmarket trainer Michael Jarvis worked for Smyth for two years in the sixties and led Charlottown up on the day he won the Derby.

"I had a couple of seasons with him in 1966 and `67," Jarvis said.

"We had two very successful years together and we've always had a good friendly chat over the years.
